I heard that originally Neon Genesis Evangelion was supposed to be a 50 Episode Anime but after Episode 18, moral guardians in Japan freaked out over the violence in that episode.

The part where Evangelion Unit 03 and to a lesser extent its pilot Touji being mercilessly ripped apart by a dummy plug controlled Evangelion Unit 01.

The production company GAINAX had their budget cut for the rest of evangelion's production hence why the show was reduced down to 26 episodes and why infamous scenes like the extended elevator scene and the last two episodes were implemented (due to budget reasons)
