Independence Day: Resurgence has officially arrived in theaters today, with early screenings having been shown last night and despite a lack of box office reporting, director Roland Emmerich has revealed he already has plans of continuing the franchise on with a sequel to Resurgence. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Emmerich revealed that Independence Day 3 would take place in space, only a few years after the events of Resurgence, unlike the 20 year gap between Independence Day and its sequel. Emmerich also expressed interest in keeping the same cast on hand for Independence Day 3 and that he would also return to direct the third installment - adding that he would never let anyone else direct an Independence Day movie.
"The next one will be an intergalactic journey,” Emmerich tells Empire. "It'll be [set] maybe a year or two later, not 20 years [on]. I want to maintain this group of people, especially the young characters, and Jeff [Goldblum] and Brent [Spiner] will take part in it. It'll be fun to keep that group together.” Would this famously sequel-shy filmmaker hand the reins to another director? Not likely. "Will I definitely direct it? Oh yes. I'd never, ever let someone else do it."
