Despite a huge marketing campaign and tons and tons of hype, Independence Day: Resurgence is proving to be a huge financial disappointment for Fox, having only grossed $305,405,529 worldwide on a budget of $165 million, so it looks like it will only just about break even.
So yeah, we'll probably never see Independence Day 3, but if you want to experience more stories in the series' universe, then check out the novel Independence Day: Crucible, which you can buy here. It serves as a prequel to Resurgence, bridging the gap between the first and second alien invasions of Earth. Author Greg Keyes is an established sci-fi and fantasy writer, having previously authored both Star Wars and Elder Scrolls novels.
There's also Independence Day: The Complete Omnibus, which adapts the first film in addition to featuring two new stories (buy it here), the Resurgence novelisation, and even an awesome comic anthology called Dark Fathom.
We certainly won't be seeing a third film, but at least the Independence Day franchise will live on in the medium of literature.
