Yesterday, a mere two days after his 69th birthday and the launch of his latest album Blackstar, British rock legend and superstar David Bowie passed away, having lost an eighteen month battle against cancer. He was with close friends and family at the time.

Born David Robert Jones in London, England on the 8th January 1947, David adopted the last name Bowie after the American frontiersman and his well known hunting knife to avoid confusion in the mid-sixties with fellow artist Davy Jones and the Monkees, later naming his debut album "David Bowie" in 1967.

Two years later Bowie's breakthrough album "Space Oddity" was released and launched the artist into international stardom. The same year Bowie met Angela Barnett. They married the following year and had a son the year following that - Hollywood writer and director Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones (pictured above), whom will be releasing his epic movie Warcraft based on the videogame by Blizzard Entertainment this June 10th. It was Duncan that broke the sad news of his fathers passing earlier today...

Achieving legendary status during the 1970's and 1980's, David Bowie forged a career as a solo music artist and actor, releasing iconic songs such as Major Tom, Starman, Is There Life On Mars, The Man Who Sold The World, Ziggy Stardust and many, many more as well as staring in movies such as Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), and The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976). His biggest movie role however was that of Jareth the Goblin King in the 1986's Labyrinth (pictured below) opposite A Beautiful Mind's (2001) Jennifer Connelly. Thoughout his 40 plus years career Bowie has also worked with some of the biggest and most influential names in the music history including Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger and Trent Reznor.

Well known for his androgynous appearance, unique music and his eccenctric stage and public life theatrics David Bowie was one of the most influential artists of his generation, with Trent Reznor and Tilda Swinton citing him as diectly influential to their respective careers. Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

In addition to his son Duncan, David is survived by his daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones born in 2000 and his second wife, Somali-American model Iman. In this time of loss and grief Bowie's family have asked for respect and privacy.

Everyone here at Scified, staff and fans alike would like to extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to his family and his friends. A legendary star during his own lifetime, may David Bowie shine as the brightest star in the sky he so coveted!

Sad news, Gavin. I loved his music, and I went to his shows. One concert in the early 1990s, I had front-row center. In-between several songs; David would kneel down, and ask me what song I wanted to hear next. I'd tell him, he'd turn to the band, let them know, and away they went (4 songs total). Also, David kept his eyes on me for a lot of the concert; seemingly performing for only me. It was kind of overwhelming.

My date wasn't very pleased, as it was quite obvious what David was doing (in making me his 'Blue Jean performance muse'). Although, we did meet with him afterwards. I was very amused that he kept referring to me as 'Love' (it's always a pleasure to speak with anyone British). He was an incredibly charming man, to state the very least. Feelin' a tragic like we're Marlon Brandos.

Most poignant part to me is, he got to celebrate his birthday just before passing. RIP, he was so special.
