After months of speculation whether Ridley Scott would direct the sequel to Blade Runner or not, Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson have released a statement today saying director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Incendies) is in negotiations to direct. They also confirmed Harrison Ford is set to return as Rick Deckard. Ridley Scott will produce the sci-fi thriller.

“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners. Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

Written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, the story will take place "several decades" after the 1982 original. Shooting is set to begin in the Summer of 2016.

Thank Goodness. Now Ridley will be free to make Prometheus 2.

I'm kind of gutted by this news! :(

BladeRunner was Ridley Scott's vision....I just can't see another director pulling this off, but I would be happy to be proven wrong about that!

This annoucement certainly could've left one foaming from the blaster. And if there was ever a movie I wanted Ridley to direct; BR2 was most definitely it. Although, I do like Denis. I believe the sequel will be in quite talented hands under his direction.

I'm with you Lone and Sawa, I don't see the point in even making the movie If Ridley isn't directing. Very sad news indeed. It's his unique visual style that made Blade Runner what it is and I don't think any other director can capture that magic.
