Avatar 3 could be the final Avatar movie in the series if the upcoming sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water flops at the box office, according to filmmaker James Cameron. During a recent interview with Total Film the director mentioned how he'll be keeping a close eye on Avatar 2's box office performance to dictate whether or not the story should evolve past the third installment:
The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly’, if it’s just not profitable.
Cameron goes on to explain that the world has changed quite a bit since the first Avatar debuted in theaters back in 2009 - the pandemic having created a cautious atmosphere for moviegoers paired with the massive spike in online streaming platforms and providers. These factors could prove that the movie-going theater experience will not deliver the returns they expect however Cameron remains optimistic, hoping that Avatar 2 will help remind audiences of the benefit of going to a theater to enjoy the movie watching experience as it was intended:
We’re in a different world now than we were when I wrote this stuff, even. It’s the one-two punch – the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, maybe we’ll remind people what going to the theatre is all about. This film definitely does that. The question is: how many people give a shit now?
