@ CanadaPhil Yeah, I guess the real question is how far has the societies as a whole on Earth progressed. But, since the Nostromo was an ore vessel we can assume at least that other resources may now be scarce and still cause turbulence. That's one of the things I liked about the Aliens movies, as Mr. Cameron put it, it's the "used space" look. That to me was always contrary to Star Trek which is a very flowery, hopeful future. A future not unlike the one that would transpire if indeed Peter Weyland did fix all of our problems. Who know. definately looking forward to the movie though. Take care.

^^^^ This. They are trying to hedge their bets. For younger audiences, ANY mention of ALIEN is linked in their minds to the recent AVP/Predator crap and the last movie of the original franchise did extremely poorly in the eyes of moviegoers and critics at the time. Well hell, even to this day most original fans HATE the 3rd and 4th movies in the franchise. It makes perfect sense that they are trying to limit their comments on any direct connection to the "Alien Universe" (EVEN IF THERE IS IN FACT ONE), because in a lot of circles, it could translate into box office poison for them. Its a perfectly rational strategy. I agree that they should be trying to market this to BRAND NEW audiences as something completely new. Remember that 20th C. Fox is going to have to make a boatload of money on this, or we will probably never see a serious attempt to revisit the original storyline again.

It's been mentioned before that Fox is only concerned when it comes to mass producing a copywritten or trademarked product and not at the level of creating a few items for your own use

@Sabot... Sure.. I agree completely with that, but something else just does not seem quite right here. This is supposedly a guy who by 35 had basically come up a means for completely sustainable clean energy, solved all of Earth's climate issues (which would probably logically follow that world food production is also now level and sustainable and CURED CANCER!! We then almost overnight, go from a guy who has seemingly solved EVERYTHING and ACHIEVED EVERTHING, yet now is fixated on developing weapons specifically for use in SPACE and in Zero-G (sounds like it anyway) and all kinds of atmospheres?? It even kind of sounds like the schools he is setting up for underpriviledged youth and or the penal facilities are possibly a means of indoctrinating legions of loyal followers to do Weylands future bidding?? Im really interested about the whole Weyland story arc now. I think its curious that there is really no other mention of the HELIADES so far in any movie info.. It obviously sounds like a mission that PRECEEDED the Prometheus by decades... What did it uncover??

Agree with Brain Salad Surgery. There's a bad vibe around the alien franchise given the last few movies. That vibe could keep the general audience away from this movie if they connect the two. So they're semi-distancing themselves from the franchise. But yes...Scott and the studio are basically holding up a blue-colored card in front of our faces and telling us "[i]This card is NOT blue[/i]." LOL

I guess I am not that suggestable but only 2 movies ever gave me the creeps and neither one was Alien related.

i am speculating here but i think it is because the "Alien" franchise is property of 20th century fox, so a direct connection or link would limit the creative availablity for future films. So by it not being a direct prequel Mr. Scott can keep giving us more good films....i hope....so excited!!!

I'm not expecting alot of action, nor do I want it. I want more of a thought provoking thrill ride. More horror then action. That being said Ridley Scott does action sequences very well. He's extremely detailed and creates realistic sequences that are both visually stunning and thrilling. I'm thinking Body of lies Kingdom of heaven Gladiator Black hawk down All have really well executed action scenes. As to your comment Dallas!dallas! If the film had very little action and was more of a mind trip like Solaris or 2001 I would love it that way!

And TONS of loading pallets because they have cool holes and light can shine through them for wall decoration. Used in every sci fi movie and TV show. We had tons of them on Babylon 5.

Curious...! A bio-engineered artificial intelligence with organic and mechanical/electrical components acting as an "overseer" or central control hub. It would pilot the spaceship and control/make all decisive actions and let the crew do their thing while it guides them to their destination. Then when the ship lands, it would go into a period of semi-consciousness. In other words, a "sleep" period that monitors functions, but receives orders from the crew. It could have its own personality, beliefs, and ideas-but could be manually disengaged at any moments' notice. This gives me an artistic inspiration.....thanks for the idea, suckers!

Rick...for some reason, the studio was "afraid" to reference Alien in any way (not sure why, given the franchise's success, although I suppose the last 2 installments and the AvP stuff probably scared them) so as not to cause people to be prejudiced, and I think Sir Ridley and Damon and everyone have been obliging them in every way possible, when we all know, and they know that it is in fact totally an Alien Prequel, and that the other stuff is just lipservice...

@CanadaPhil While your point is valid, I think it's easy to write off the reasoning for Space worthy Marines via. Corporate Industry interdiction needs right here on Earth. Having a weapons platform w/ troops capable of deploying (into orbit) from the U.S. and then dropping in over a zone the corporation deems necessary for asset security is not that far fetched and would save time and money getting that craft/troops to the area of operations. It would make a great precursor for offworld deployment, standard operating procedures.

But we could also just as easily say that after EXHAUSTING whatever firepower they may have had, Janek in desperation decides to RAM... but I still think that there is a TON of misdirection going on in that sequence. Also, if you really read between the lines of the timeline, it sounds like Corporations (especially Weylands!) are becoming MORE powerful than governments.

I'd be interested to see how Alien 3 would have turned out if the studio people would have left Fincher alone and let him do the movie he wanted to do.

Curious to see they refer to it as an Alien prequel.. funny how this keeps coming up, and the film-makers keep giving us, "well it's maybe kind of prequel but not really but yea sort-of"... They say one thing then they work mighty hard to give us a trailer that suggests something else. I think they're just trying to keep us guessing till the end which is fine with me.

@ You have my sympathy Both Alien and Aliens were outstanding movies! I agree that there was a degradation in the series but it started with placing a "flagship" movie series like Alien into the hands of a first time film director... Mr. Fincher. From there it just gets worse.

Yea, I'd say definitely the designs are from two different civilizations - one suggests a symmetrical-thinking species while the derelict is anything but.

Or the ship in tne first photo has a different purpose than the one on the planet.

Membrane hit the nail; I had seen photos of Dettifoss also and that black formations are almost certainly the rock wall and not a man (or alien) made structure. In another photo, we can see a circular feature in the belly of the circular spacecraft. Who knows what it is. I think the different designs could be a hint that we will see more than one alien civilizations in "Prometheus". The guys on board that thing seems to have a different design phylosophy than the SJ people...

Even Stephen Hawking believes we should be very careful about seeking contact with ETs, based on the fact that the evolution/support of a large brain requires a caloric intake which only predation can provide. In other words, anything we meet out there will have a history of violence.

They seed the planet and leave clues to a rendezvous point because once a race has developed enough to follow them, there are billions of units available to harvest and or infect. They need raw materials and hosts to fuel their biomechanical empire.

I think that if "Prometheus" was weaponized they would not feel the need to crash the ship unto the still not derelicted Derelict, dying in this very process.... :) Still, I think this is a weak point in the movie. Scott must come with a good explanation for this. The only explanation I can think of is that albeit the future world is a place of powerful corporations, the government still has a modicum of control over the monopoly of force and forbids private vessels of carrying weapons. Weyland would be eager to comply, mainly if they were trying to hide the real nature of their mission from other parties.

Fear of spoilers is for sissies. :) C´mon, when LotR was made, everybody with eyes already knew the whole story. But the movie was superb and made a lot of money for the suits. I don´t think even the leakage of the whole actual script would make "Prometheus" suffer a lot; nobody in it´s right mind would give up of seeing the actual footage.

ok so it maybe a big cannon or a big telescope ? But why either ? your in a spaceship why not just fly there ? my own personal theroy is its a scanner used to create the start maps fly to a new part of space set it off and it maps all the start systems planets and galaxys ! But I've been proved wrong before !

both AVP's would go. Alien 3 and and 4 I would allow to live, but only as their own entities, never to be referred to as "Alien" canon again...
