Will Tron: Ares get a sequel? The third entry in the iconic sci-fi film franchise left audiences with a tantalizing cliffhanger and exciting post-credit scene – but all that momentum might have been for nothing. Sadly, Ares is facing a tidal wave of negativity from professional film critics, despite majority of public moviegoers having enjoyed the film. The visually masterful Joachim Rønning picture is also struggling to generate the numbers Disney were hoping for at the box office.
Coming in $10 million shy of projections, Tron: Ares earned $33.2 million during its opening weekend domestically – on a reported $180 million budget, that initial figure doesn't instill much confidence. Overseas, the film hasn't fared much better, earning an additional $27 million. Altogether the film has barely made over $60 million globally during its first weekend.
By comparison, 2010's Tron: Legacy cost $170 million but managed to generate $400 million globally during its theatrical run. If Ares is to be considered a success and warrant any sequels, it has a lot of work to do.
Suffice to say, it's not looking good. While die-hard Tron fans have done their part, a film of this magnitude requires more enthusiasm. It also doesn't help that Leto is currently facing 9 accusations of misconduct, as purported by Air Mail. While Leto's representatives have denied all allegations, such headlines have enough sway, many are favoring to boycott the Jared Leto-led blockbuster just in case.
