The Jared Leto-led Tron: Ares has finally crossed $100 million at the global box office this weekend but Ethan Hawke is taking a bite out of the box office pie as Black Phone 2 debuts to $42 million. While Ares has managed to finally cross the triple digit million mark, it wasn't by much – the film amassed an additional $14.1 million internationally over its second weekend haul – a 54% drop. Paired with a domestic take so far of $54.6 million, Tron: Ares' global take now sits at $103 million.
As we previously reported, the factors impacting Ares' box office struggles seem to have less to do with public sentiment and more to do with economic climate – the box office as a whole has been slow to churn out dollars this month. But, Black Phone 2 has seemingly reinvigorated audiences and their wallets.
We are approaching Halloween and this time of year is primed for Horror – not science fiction. It doesn't help either that Black Phone 2 has received unanimous praise by the same outlets and critics whose reviews slaughtered Tron: Ares.
Despite a steep uphill battle against negative critical reception, rumors and scandals surrounding the film's lead and a reluctant market, Tron: Ares remains in the fight. It's unlikely Disney will recuperate its $180 million production budget on ticket sales alone, so we expect a streaming / digital home entertainment release to follow at Lightcycle speed.
