Headlines are relentlessly hammering Tron: Ares, hailing the Jared Leto-led sequel as a flop – but despite the stiff criticism, the film remains #1 across the world! The reason for Tron’s stagnant earnings at the box office have less to do with Tron’s quality and more to do with the market as a whole – people simply are not spending money at the movies right now.
Tron: Ares saw a 65% drop this weekend, earning an abysmal $3 million this past Friday. Domestically the picture will be lucky to clear $55 million within its first 10 days. No doubt a major blow, considering the film cost around $180 million to make.
The Rock’s The Smashing Machine by comparison has suffered even more, earning less than $20 million so far and it debuted before Ares. The Avatar: Way of Water re-release has yet to cross the $23 million mark – so Tron’s $70 million global haul so far doesn’t look so bad by comparison.
Nevertheless, the fact remains that the film is struggling to recuperate its cost which doesn’t bode well for future instalments – disappointing news for hard core Tron fans who are anticipating a follow-up after Ares’ sequel set-ups.
We have to give Tron some credit, times are tough and the market is unforgiving. By all accounts, people are loving Ares – ourselves included. If you’ve seen it, be sure to share your review with us by clicking the movie page link below!
