The hit sci-fi Television series The X-Files is officially getting rebooted by Sinners director Ryan Coogler and franchise icons David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson might be involved! During a screening of Sinners at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this past Friday, Coogler told Variety he's rebooting The X-Files for his mother and hopes to do right by her and the fans:
Like my relationship with ‘Rocky’ with my dad, ‘The X-Files’ is one of those things with my mom. My mom means the world to me — she’s actually here tonight — so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.
When inquired about whether or not Duchovny, Anderson or Danielle Deadwyler (who's also been rumored to have been cast as well) is involved, Ryan said he could neither confirm or deny their involvement, with a laugh.
Back in April, 2025 Coogler did acknowledge having spoken to Gillian Anderson about revisiting The X-Files and had said his fingers were crossed she'd be open to returning. At the time, Gillian was wrapping up work on Tron: Ares and there's been no confirmation of her X-Files return since.
The X-Files reboot has officially been in development since 2023 but now that Sinners has come to pass, production is going to ramp up. As new developments become available, we'll be sure to keep you updated!
