A new movie still from James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash showcases a battle between the Wind Traders and the hostile Mangkwan Tribe! Empire Magazine revealed the exclusive image in conjunction with an interview with the film's second-unit director Garrett Warren as a teaser for their upcoming issue. Inside, Garrett explains the incredible lengths production went to building massive scale practical sets for the next N'avi instalment:
One sequence in the film sees the benevolent airborne Wind Traders, led by David Thewlis’ Peylak, attacked by the fearsome new Na’vi antagonists – the Ash People, aka the Mangkwan clan. It’s a skybound skirmish that, for all its astonishing effects, was produced as practically as possible. Including the use of real fire. “We want people to feel the heat,” second-unit director Garrett Warren says, teasing the sequence as “a cross between a pirate-ship [invasion] and an air-to-air combat battle, with the ikran, the flying creatures that move through the air, like fighter jets”.
Their feature goes on to reveal production built 100-foot long aluminum air ships and ikran puppets for the stunt performers to use on set! You can read more in Empire Magazine's upcoming issue which hits shelves September 25th!
