Although I don't normally like to report on news about anime this is far too big to let slide. When Bandai Entertainment closed its doors in March 2013 it took the entire Gundam catalog with it. It also torpedoed any hope that unreleased Gundam series would be made available in North American. Prices for previously released series skyrocketed and the Gundam franchise, once a massive, commercial powerhouse in the early 2000s, was all but extinct in North America.
Gundam fans can rejoice once again. At the recent New York Comic Con Sunrise Animation announced it had made a deal with Right Stuf, Inc. to redistribute the Gundam franchise in North America in 2015. The first two series to see North American distribution will be a re-release of the original Mobile Suit Gundam and the previously unreleased Turn-A Gundam. Later, Right Stuff singled out Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (Double Zeta) as another title to be release:
“In this newly expanded agreement, Right Stuf will continue to be the distribution arm for Sunrise as they work to re-release out-of-print Mobile Suit Gundam classic programming, along with the first-ever North American releases of Turn A Gundam, Gundam ZZ and more!”
In addition to previous series, Sunrise announced they were close to finishing a deal to release the latest series Gundam Reconguista in G. The new series will launch in North America, “by the end of the year.” In addition the Original Video Animation adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam: Origins (a prequel manga to the original series) will see a western release as well.
No word on whether or not these titles will be available on Bluray as well, but fans can expect to see them in 2015.
