After the brief but lukewarm reception of movies like Super 8, Cloverfield and Monsters, this years Godzilla movie has proven that the appeal of the Japanese Kaiju movies can be just as gigantic in western cinema. Yet before Gareth Edwards brought us a modern, western retelling of the King of Monsters, Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro blew away western audiences with the monster movie of 2013 – Pacific Rim.

While Pacific Rim may have only amassed $411 million worldwide there is no doubt that the movie paved the way for, and prepared audiences for Gareth Edwards monster hit, wish so far has amassed $525 million. With news of a Godzilla sequel in the works and the Skull Island monster movie, set upon the island that gave us King Kong, it is unmistakable that the age of the monster movie is upon us once again.
While it is already known that the worldwide box office takings for Pacific Rim has already encouraged Legendary Pictures to greenlight Pacific Rim 2,which is due for release April 7th, 2017, new reports suggest the sequel will also lead into a third instalment, according to director Del Toros plans...
“some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”
