Last we heard about Pacific Rim 2 was back in March of this year, following Pacific Rim's massive appeal with both western and eastern movie goers. Legendary's Thomas Tull had mentioned their enthusiasm towards continuing on the new franchise with a sequel. Now, we know that the script for Pacific Rim 2 is currently being written by Zak Penn (writer of X-Men: The Last Stand & The Incredible Hulk).
Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro recently sat down with Buzz Feed and discussed his plans for Pacific Rim 2. During the interview Del Toro revealed that Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) will return in the sequel, and that the story will follow on from Pacific Rim, and will not be a prequel, as some fans have speculated in the past. Below are a few excerpts from the interview:
“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” he told BuzzFeed. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”
“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” del Toro said. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”
