In a striking turn of events, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro has spoken out about the possible fate of his highly-anticipated sequel Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom (working title). Via Twitter the beloved director reassured thousands of angry fans that the sequel was still happening, one way or another.
Following our previous report, which cited The Hollywood Reporter's claims that Universal Studios were likely pulling the plug on the Mecha vs. Kaiju follow-up, it would seem many of us jumped the gun in assuming this rumor were true. Many Kaiju fans worldwide let out a huge sigh of relief when they read Del Toro's tweet:
Pac Rim 2 cancelled? Don't believe everything you read. It's still going and I'll remain w it in one way or another!

Neither Legendary or Universal have updated fans on the current state of Pacific Rim 2 following their last announcement, which left the film in limbo. Without a release date or production start date, the situation seemed rather dire.
However, following Guillermo's mention that the script and budget for Pacific Rim 2 had been submitted, it seemed odd to hear that Universal were considering scrapping the film all together.
Either way, we're very glad to see Guillermo clarifying the situation for us. As more updates on Pacific Rim 2 are released, be sure to keep it locked to Scified!
