New Line Cinema have officially green lit and beginning work on a sequel to the latest film adaptation of Mortal Kombat! The untitled sequel (Mortal Kombat 2) has tapped Jeremy Slater to pen the film's script! Slater served as head writer most recently on the Disney/Marvel series Moon Knight.
The first Mortal Kombat arrived last year simultaneously on HBO Max as well as in theaters and despite releasing during a pandemic, fared very well at the box office; second best opening of the pandemic in 2021 actually, only being beaten by Godzilla vs. Kong. The sequel is expected to pick up where the first one left off, but the plot is currently unknown. We can however assume the sequel will see the return of franchise icon Sub-Zero since the actor who played Sub-Zero in the first film, Joe Taslim reportedly signed on for up to four sequels.
Currently no other official plot details, cast or release date information have been announced. As new information surfaces we'll be sure to keep you posted!
