James Cameron is currently writing the script for his own, new Terminator movie (Terminator 7 until an official title is revealed) but during a recent interview with CNN, he admits to struggling with writer's block. Writing science fiction isn't as easy today as it was in the 1980s, as technology continues to progress at such an exponential rate, Cameron expresses the challenge with writing something today that can still pass for science fiction by the time the film releases:
I'm having a hard time writing science fiction right now. I’m tasked with writing a new Terminator story. I’ve been unable to get started on that very far because I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now.
He's certainly right. Back in 2022, Cameron was quoted saying his plans for another Terminator would likely focus on the impact of Artificial Intelligence rather than killer robots. In today's world, 3 years later, A.I. is becoming commonplace. Mind you, technically the Terminator / SkyNet story always was about A.I. and the robots were merely an extension of that technology. The more confusing hurdle to get over is the paradoxical timeline jumping Terminator is known for.
As it stands, James Cameron is working on another Terminator, but it still might be some time before it comes to fruition.
