Toei Animation revealed on May 19th that the long awaited live action Gaiking is still in the works. The project was announced in 2010 and was thought to be dead after 2012 marked the last time anything was heard about it.
Based on the 1976 anime of the same name, Sanshiro Tsuwabuki is recruited to pilot the giant robot “Gaiking” which defends the planet from the alien Dark Horror Army. The series was remade in 2005 as Gaiking: The Legend of Daikuu Maryuu.
The last we heard, Gale Anne Hurd (producer of The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) was announced as a producer on the film. Her production company Valhalla Entertainment (The Walking Dead) will reportedly team with Toei Animation (Dragon Ball, Captain Harlock) and All Nippon Entertainment Works. It's unclear if all companies are still involved, but there isn't much reason to think they aren't at the moment.
In addition to the announcement that Gaiking is still in the cards, Toei hinted at other giant robot films in the future. Could Mazinger Z or Beast King GoLion (aka, Voltron) be in the works as well? Pacific Rim 2 might not be alone in the coming years.
