i think i quote MST3K episodes more then anything else. i think my main aliens quote i used a lot was at an old job. after i got back from my days off and anyone did/said anything stupid i would ask "did iqs just drop sharply while i was away?" i also use just about any excuse to make the terminator2 theme sound a few times a week. SpartacusPrometheus Forum"Cinematic Device" In The Alien Franchise"
flacnvinyl Member Send PM › Posted Mar-16-2012 8:46 PM | Moderate @Spartacus - I am a self-described audiophile who got his start in audio. I started bootlegging Rolling Stones concerts in the 90s, moved on to sound for band demos, then my own studio, so forth. I collect vinyl hence my screenname which I use all over the place. You are DEAD ON about surround sound. I have a 37" LED LCD tv and 5.1 that is properly calibrated to the room. It is a JOY to have friends over and watch a good movie. Usually we get remarks about it, but the funny thing is that some nice Polk or Yamahas, a Denon amp and a solid tv can deliver such a great cinematic experience that I hardly feel the need to go to the theater. Additionally, I love mixing in 5.1... It is very rare that a client actually needs it, but its a blast as long as they don't want some unrealistic 'in the middle of the band' type mix. It has to be direction. Another point, it is fantastic for gaming. Playing Skyrim or Mass Effect is just a plain joy in 5.1. Gorgeous scores, you hear enemies infront/behind/sides/way off in the distance, so forth.. Fully immersive. Alien, IMHO, does not have the best sound quality from a technical standpoint, but it still has a certain charm about it. I love the dynamic range. When Ripley and Parker are fighting the range from whisper to beligerent is massive. Most movies simply cripple the loudness (Michael Bay) to the point that it no longer matters whether anyone is shouting, firing a weapon or farting, every single sound is blazingly loud. Even worse with music these days. I dig your rant but I do have to disagree with you on something... Ressurection sucks. I re-watched the film about a month ago, and I hate it now more than ever. I remember seeing it in the theater and thinking 'this isn't furthering the film, and the hybrid should have been designed by Giger'. The smiling aliens in the swimming scene SUCK. Then again... the directing style is so terrible that it overshadows good FX. So I recant... the FX are overall solid, but the way they are used destroys anything inherently 'good' about them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sorry I missed this post due to the situation I mentioned yesterday but in response I LOVE what you wrote here "Flac". I understand your position on "REZ" but I will always maintain that there were some tings in it we all loved, albeit few and far between, like "The Betty", "Solid Laser Poured Cube Scotch", and "guns up your sleeves"...but never the less there were some good things in it we liked even though overall it's not such a reputable film and let's face it, it's got some really bad moments in it. I defend it though because never the less it was a "Whopping Financial Success" {Made initial profit of 80 mill I believe}and actually contributed to all us being here today. I absolutely Hated that Creature though and so I do agree with a lot of the venom for it. Sound can make such a Huge Difference in how film is perceived and if you do not believe that just look at the proof I provided everyone about this...and how it was perceived...more than 3/4's of THIS COMMUNITY STILL DOES NOT even REALIZE THAT PARKER 100% farts loudly and deliberately while drinking his coffee and asking Dallas if he minds if he finishes it...3/4's of the people here man, STILL HAVEN;T NOTICED IT...AND RIDLEY 100% OBVIOUSLY LEFT THAT IN THE FILM DELIBERATELY...IT'S SO VERY FRUSTRATING TO ME, AND YET SO FRIKKIN' HYSTERICAL !
FrantzPrometheus ForumBeware, Prometheus NOT a Historical Document...
If religion can be argued ( and of course it have to !! ) science must be argued too ... there is no exact science expecially on big meanings . I like that nothing is given for certain . For some people science is a religion ... its not , is just our research for truth ( just like what religion should be ) ...and since is a never ending journey nothing can be taken as definitive .
i think the whole mutation thing is one. instead of just being invaded by a parasite, something is changing you and taking your humanity away. that seems to be a huge fear of humans, and i cant even count how many series and movies i have seen where people talk about what makes someone human and how important it is and so on and fight anything that wants to take that away from them, even commit suicide if that is the only option. apparently its supposed to be so great even numerous non human things want to be human. pinnochio, androids, demons, and so on.
"I'll be so disappointed if the space jockey turns out to be a mutated human." I thought it blatantly obvious that the space jockeys exist as some kind of bio-technological creature and the technology they harness transforms the humans into proto-aliens. A friend of mine's uncle works at the studio as a driver, and told him the main twist in a "you already know this don't you?" kind of way. I've told my mate not to tell me what it was, but told him my theories about people transforming being the main twist etc, and he said "not even close". Which is encouraging.
First off, thank you so much for sharing that tone. It's awesome. Now I hate to be a jerk and ask, but is it possible for you to upload a sample of the siren sound without the little blip sounds? I've been trying to create a tone myself, but I can't get that clean siren sound. I've been using the trailer as my audio source.
EGR101Prometheus ForumMusic for Prometheus IMAX Teaser (WonderCon) -- What is it?
@ Mark Cawley I think OP is referring to the IMAX Teaser released at WonderCon. That is a rather bizarre combination of drum n bass, dub step, Nine Inch Nail style of Industrial Rock stuff that I think is pretty damn intense, very ominous, and keeping with the atmosphere of the film. Personally after the Full AMC trailer this is the best of the bunch. The Audiomachine track is found on the first Teaser and the 2nd half of the Full AMC trailer. GAME OF THRONES on HBO, BEst Thing on TV Right Now
First, Alien has always been one of my all time favorite movies. Second, I've always been very interested in the ancient astronaut theory. There's no bigger idea, IMO, than the pursuit and potential discovery of our creators. Now, put those two together, and you have my ideal dream movie. It would be absolutely impossible for me not to geek out over this film.
he may be changing into dr.evil instead, lol. i want to se something new and cool. like how the alien was the first of its kind and changed aliens and monsters to this day as we know it. seems like most of them looked almost exactly like people (star trek and such) or they were just big ball/mound shaped things with or without fur ( lost in space types). all the ideas cant be taken right? there must be a way to create a creature thats original and unique again. after the biomech alien everyone wants to rip it off lol. i was hoping for something new and unique in this movie i hope they arent just all mutants :/ im pretty disapointed with the big humanoid blue guy supposedly being the jockey. id rather they looked like the suit does, or something weird like the squid baby.... or something like krang. Looks like you guys are on track concerning the relevance of the movie's title. The crew do something to tick off the space jockeys.
I hope to god not. I'll be so disappointed if the space jockey turns out to be a mutated human. I prefer that they discover an actual alien, not just fucking goo that turns a human being into another being. That just seems cheap. He's already used a similar formula to introduce an alien in 'Alien'.
He certainly looks very similar facially to the giant blue guy from some of the other scenes. I wander if it because it is an Engineer/Human mutation and the other Engineers have the trunk nose...............
NoXWordPrometheus Forum3d glasses suck, but the visuals are amazing!
The problem with 3D is that it is something being force fed to our eyes, with the eyes fooling the brain and viceversa. In real life the eyes are immersed in a real 3d environment and they can shift the focal plane between objects at different distances. In 3D movies the eyes are forced to focus on one plane only, the projection screen, so there's no real freedom for the eye to wander through the picture and choose a different focal point. If something is blurred in the background (or in the front), it will stay blurred because that's how it was shot, yet the eye will naturally try to focus on it, trying to shift to a new, nonexistent focal plane. Hence the headaches. IMO the real-eye friendly breakthrough will be the introduction of holographic movies.
HeustessPrometheus ForumBreathing Air
We have the confirmation that the air is poisonous outside, but rendered harmless inside by the space jockeys. :) Flames just need 3 things: combustible, a source of dioxygen and heat. The planet's air must be filled with dioxygen, but thanks to large quantities of sulphur, carbon monoxide (that's an evil chemical that can't be smelled or detected by daily or conventional means) or some other gas, corrosive or not, the air is just lethal to certain living marco-organisms like trees or humans. As for the Promethean mutant, it can breathe the air thanks to a new set of lungs, or it merely is not taking a breather.
That was an inspired interview ... that's made me think that out Earth has been visited a sh!t load of times, by lots of other 'species', Aliens, over a vast number of years, is cool ... like an interglactic stop over ... therefore it's not ours ... it's not theirs ... it's everyone's planet ... I always keep on saying NO ONE knows the full facts of how we really started out and the full facts about this planet or the stars ... it's all theories & speculation with a bit of science ... we've just got used to excepting it because we don't know any better ... yet ... until we are able to get 100% results we just DON'T know ... the science is there but then it's no good using it, then speculating a result ... it's got to be fact ...
NoXWordAlien Movies Forumif you could destroy the AVP movies...
I wouldn't destroy any of them (as much as I despise AVP:R). They should be left there as an eternal mark of shame (especially for the Strause Bros). But in order to do justice to the orginal canon and creatures, it would be awesome if the red button replaced the aliens in the AVP movies with Freddy Krueger clones, Edward Cullens or Gummi Bears, as it would make much more sense. My greatest desire, though, would be for the red button to turn Alien 3 into what Fincher was envisioning.
@ Freeze Him - "Will 3d work with a 3d blue ray player and a non 3d HD? Just wondering?" Nah, you need both a 3D TV and 3D Blu Ray Player. The type of 3D on my TV is a new type of 3D for home cinema - Passive 3D. The glasses dont need batteries and are very cheap - about £2 a pair. They dont dull/darken the image, they dont flicker the image into each eye(which was a big cause of headaches in older 3D TVs) So yeah, no headaches so far. I think you just get used to it after watching a few times. Even the Nintendo 3D gave me major headaches and caused my eyes to go blurry at first LOL But you quickly adjust. Even though Im a fan of 3D, I still like watching my films in 2d and will watch Prometheus in both.
@ShinobiX9X These are my thoughts as well. The other day I was talking about how Poseidon, one of the kings of Atlantis, belongs to the God class and is Zeus' brother. He's also related to the Titans, and there are legends about the Atlanteans using flying machines and being a tall race of hominids. The Atlanteans were said to have extremely advanced technology. Created mermaids (hence some of the myths of them actually being mermaids), and disappeared from the Earth after their kingdom vanished into the sea during cataclysms, the arrival of the Titan monsters, and the flood. The blue guys were given a gift by their creators and are our older brothers who successfully challenged the gods and won. They were to be punished for misusing the gift they received from our true creators, creators and destroyers, but it was too late and they had weaponized the fire. The Atlantean gods move to Olympus after Atlantis falls, taking refuge on the mountain tops as the biblical flood is caused by the true gods with the ability to the alter the planet. However, the God-Titan war began to rage as the Gods of Olympus stuck up for their Atlantean colonies and fight off the monsters unleashed in the ocean. The flood cleanses everything away, including the infection, or so the Titans thought so they could start over with a new line of hominids. However, the gods were able to pose as our early kings and turned the true space Jockeys' bioweapons on them, replacing them in the hierarchy after escaping the Earth with the gifts they'd been given. Nearly destroying their creators and stripping them of their power, even using their suits and preserving their legacy. Only because they're the true genetic masters, and they need at least one of this more ancient species to preserve their biobased tech and godlike status. However, ancient humans, the true jockeys' other creation still remain on the Earth in fewer numbers. From an archaeological standpoint, if the legends Plato spoke of about Atlantis having pyramids are true; then it could explain the numerous cultures who built pyramids, step-pyramids, earthen mounds, and burial mounds on each side of the Atlantic and surrounding islands. People claim to have found evidence near many submerged island chains on either side. The thing that throws me is what they would be doing leaving clues in Honolulu.
