She's referring to the stylistic choices made by the filmmakers to make a prior era have more advanced technology than the era in which the Alien film takes place.
So, since new technology and old technology can be used in both films in their respective times, nobody should question whether or not the director has addressed the issue?
Well, the director did address the issue, as I had expected.
ReplyGuestPrometheus ForumWhy Shaw must be religiousApr 4, 2012
Dont forget some Religious people do not ackowlege many things that are fact, some say the Dinosaurs was created by Man by that they just sculptures, and that indeed Man has never been on the Moon and will never ever be able to leave Earths Orbit.
Period because the Bible says so ;)
BigDave, I may have misunderstood your post- but I have to ask if you've ever opened a Bible. There is nothing in it that in any way comes close to what you said. If you are in fact claiming the Bible speaks of man creating dinosaurs and such, then I advise you to verify the information.
The term "religious" has nothing to do with God. People who believe only in evolution are part of a religion, just as much as those who believe in God. While there are scientific facts spread thinly over the THEORY of evolution, it is not and can never be proven 100% until we figure a way to travel in time at the very least. Belief in evolution requires just as much faith as a belief in God. Both have reasonable facts to fit the theory, but neither can be absolutely proven.
I for one believe in God, and have my own reasons to back up my faith. I also have no problem at all if others don't. You have yours, and I have mine. Just don't try to tell me I'm wrong about what I believe, and I will do the same for you. I can tell you however, that I have no problem with much of what the scientific community says- with a few exceptions. As Ridley Scott himself has said, regardless of which side of the fence (science or spiritual) you are on, at some point you must at least have an open mind for the possibility of the other. We simply can't answer all the questions with only one. Obviously I am paraphrasing, but what he says is clear.

Interesting take on things, we definitely have a lot of weird stages when the embryo starts developing, showing our evolutionary history. Maybe when they cut it out of Shaw it's really big, but not done developing yet and continues to change rapidly outside the body, showing what they're based on and their strange ontology. We get a mix of the amphibian/reptilian hindbrain and the bigger cortex of mammals along with the mid-brain that controls the fight or flight response. When we go through those earlier stages it shows that we're evolved from aquatic/amphibious creatures way the hell back that transitioned to mammals. We even have gills at one point which become part of our inner ears. The larynx is strange too, it starts in the back of your throat as something more like what a bird uses to make calls. Then as the embryo develops it travels down your throat and becomes a human voicebox, meaning we evolved a complex way of producing sounds that no other primate had. Which gave us an edge over even some of the other hominids: our ability to communicate more effectively and work together to pass on ideas about the world, tool building, hunting techniques etc.

@pol III: It has. Watch the several Q&A and other interviews outthere. Scott and Lindelof have said many times that the Nostromo in the first Alien was a just towing-refinery-mining ship. The Prometheus is a top-of-the-line prototype luxury ship. Need I say more?

And, omfg they really do wanna re-make it.. wow
About David Lindoff, I hated "Lost" after the 2nd season and hope to god this movie will be nothing like that with the flashbacks, time travel and parallel timelines. :/

@goodkat
I assume this is response to me? I thought it would be obvious that I was not "comparing" cars to spacecraft?
I was using cars as an example by which to describe the actual fact of life, which is that, for a whole host of reasons: technology endures.
New technology does not simply erase all previous technology as if it never existed. The principle, is the fact - one that you can probably prove by looking around your home or going into the street, or even emptying your bag - that Old technology shares the Present with new technology.
It's very simple and it has nothing at all to do with "style".
I don't know what you're saying.

Took some googling re-wording to find it. I almost thought I was losing my mind, because I recall seeing it and I was 100% sure it wasn't the book...but I hit some gold. Second time today. Not alien related, but years ago I watched this movie with the first girl that...I....well, anyway, movie name evaded me for years..I googled what I could remember, no luck. Finally found a top 10 of a certain genre, and there it was...lol. Twice in one day...man. 3 years of searching for that one movie, and somehow coming here got me to figure out the proper words.

I wasn't trying to start an argument or critique the movie in any way, actually. Was just curious. I know Ridley Scott is a great director. He does sci-fi well, which is saying something. To do that, you have to be sensitive to these issues, which is why I had figured he had addressed it. Anyway, can't wait for the movie!

Really you're going to compare cars to space craft, since when are space craft built for style? It's unrealistic for both crafts to be so far apart in technology and arguing this is pointless because at the end of the day it wasn't about being realistic but rather about style (referring to the movie).

It already was addressed, by Ridley Scott himself. He said he changed to the "new" look because he invented grundge, and was tired of it.
In other words, the look is cleaner and higher tech simply because he wanted it to be that way.
Lindlehoff also made the point of the Nostromo being a mining vessel, so it was dirty, and older technology. A science vessel would have the latest and greatest.

Agreed on the linearity complaint. Everything looks heavily scripted with quicktime events and all the rest of that console bullshit. Seems like they are really trying to nail the atmosphere and flow of the movie at the expense of gameplay.

If you go out, today, and see a Prius hybrid driving the same street as a 1965 Ford, as you are perfectly likely to be able to do, will you consider the "obvious gap in technology" something it necessary to consider and address?
Or will you simply have, long ago, accepted that is in the natural course of things that historic technology shares history with current and new technology - and that they overlap in the Present?

We've never seen the face/ head of the figure standing over Shaw. Most, myself included- assume that is Holloway, but we have no idea how much he has changed. I believe that he will be the "hunched-over, monkey-version" predecessor of the classic alien that Damon mentioned in the recent Q&A with Ridley.
I could be completely wrong of course, but who knows?

Well, I thought the "Shadow 19" was a pretty darn good story. Oddly enough, the ship in that story was named Prometheus as well. If Spaigths writes anything close to that, and it becomes a film- I will be going to see it. "Passengers" was kinda slow, but an original story too. He claims R. Scott used "nearly all" of his original story for the Prometheus film, so I have no reservations about it. Lindeloff gives me pause far more so than Spaiths does...
