MemberNoobJan-18-2013 5:48 PMIt appears to me that there are more and more sci fi movies coming out( since the 70's anyway). It seems to be that the sci fi genre either is or becoming the number one film genre. In terms of the box office I would say that the sci fi genre is the number one film genre. But in saying that there hasn't been many awards in the areas of acting and directing (mayber Ridley Scott, i know Sigourney Weaver got nominated for aliens) just mainly in the areas of special effect/art design.
Considering the volumes of sci fi movies shouldnt there be more, or are the bulk of sci fi movies just designed to appeal to the senses eg lasers etc

MemberContributorJan-19-2013 1:56 PMi agree it does seem to have become pretty darn popular but to garner a lot of awards and what not is tough for a scifi movie because you have to have a taste for them. a lot of people just don't, so it is left in the dark(kind of) when it comes to national recognization

MemberNoobJan-19-2013 9:29 PMI think sci fi movies offer more than contemporary movies. With some comtemporary movies the story line/plots have been done to death, they offer little in the surprise factor. everyone knows that the guy is going to get the girl or the villian is going to get shot between the eyes at the end. Sci fi movie offer concepts and idea of the future. They cover a wider area of the spectrum and i must there is alot more they can do.

Admin2KJan-20-2013 9:57 PMIt's not that it's more popular, it's that it is more accepted as legit. For a very longtime Sci-fi was treated as a joke, something that only socially awkward people enjoyed.
Look at the Batman movies for example, in the 90's they were campy while the new ones we got this decade became very serious and were treated with as much respect as any other drama.

MemberInitiateJan-25-2013 8:41 PMAs a photographer, I have seen the editing and filming technology change immensely over the last three years with the appearance of the RED camera. Technology right now permits what was thought impossible in the past to become reality. The biggest problem was lighting which for most cameras, having to work at levels of an ISO of 11000 was impossible without a red shift ( If you've tried working at these levels you will know what I mean). This makes a big difference to budget and post editing. So, the bottom line is less expenditure on more elaborate stories and ultimately Sci-fi comes out on top. Also there has been a lack of good Sci-fi on the market for a while and I think fans are hungry. Technolgy change and a good interest in the genre make for good business. I am not complaining.

MemberNoobJan-26-2013 2:33 AMI love sci fi movie, not too much the ones like transformers and battleship. The sci fi movies like bladerunner, solaris and the alien movies appeal to me, something with a bit of innovation and mystery . Movies like those aren't that common.
Some sci fi its just the CG that appeals to some people.

MemberNoobJul-06-2013 5:06 PMIt's getting more popular but it won't be mainstream such as Fast and Furious and other titles that scream cars/guns/cleavage for two hours. I'm glad it's still appealing only to a certain type of audience.
