Universal have been attempting to get one off the ground for years. Christopher Nolan flirted with a film version in 2009, which never reached completion.
The mystique of the original series has only grown with the passing of time. It aired from 1967 to 1968. Running for 17 episodes. (AMC made a mini-series in 2009 which, in my opinion, neither captured the surealism, nor flair of the original.)
The Prisoner was very much of it's time. The brainchild and obsession of star and co-creator Patrick McGoohan, and influenced by the Cold War era, it showcased his intelligence, character and style. It's Portmeiron setting, counter-culture themes, mini-moke taxis, penny farthing bicycles, blazer-clad 'Village' inhabitants, and of course the sinister, balloon-like 'Rover', all culminated in a series unlike any other.
Whilst I'm happy enough at the thought of Ridley Scott directing, it would require an actor with much gravitas to act as a strong centrepiece and fill Patrick McGoohan's shoes. I'm having a hard time imagining any actor as Number 6. I'm not even sure that such an original, classic should even be re-imagined!
Yes, The Prisoner was an allegory, a warning....a warning which society sadly ignored!
"Be seeing you!" :)
Below is a rare interview with the fascinating and brilliant Patrick McGoohan!

Tom Hardy, an actor who is incredibly versatile, will never be typecast, has strength of character and has that same slightly scary, unpredictable, intense presence as the late Patrick McGoohan!
