Please help with the name of this movie

This movie could be from the 80s or 90s.

It is set in modern day USA countryside.

There are one or two guys and one girl (young adults) driving in a vehicle.
Also with them is an odd type of guy. He acts maybe backward or strange.
There is a bit of friction in the interaction betwen these characters.

They come under attack from something and there is some chasing, maybe shooting.

They end up in a cabin or isolated house.

Some kind of monster gets into the house.
I seem to remember it is like worms come through cracks in the floorboards and it combines into a big monster maybe like a snake.

The strange guy ends up fighting it and defeats it. The guy reveals himself as a warrior who is pre-destined to fight this monster.

The guy had a strange short name and he makes a dramatic statement while he defeats the monster.

It is actually one of the best sci-fi movies I have seen.

I'd be very grateful with any help. I've searched IMDB with no luck.

I am sure it was quite a popular movie at the time.

I saw it when it was released and also a few years ago I saw the last part of it on TV.
