What did you like or dislike about Ridley's "The Counselor" (2013)?

i never get tired of reading about this movie
more bad press for the counsellor, but it seems to happen all the time with Ridleys films, I just ignore the critics now, he is the misunderstood genius in this day and age

MemberNoobNov-18-2013 10:59 AMRidley Scott: "Tony (Scott) had wanted to do do***entaries at first. I told him, 'Don't go to the BBC, come to me first.' I knew that he had a fondness for cars, so I told him, 'Come work with me and within a year you'll have a Ferrari.' And he did!"
Tony ended-up with an incredible collection of Ferraris. And he passed-on tragically, while Ridley was filming this one.

The most common compliant I've noticed, is that the film isn't coherent enough. I didn't find anything overtly lacking myself, but possibly requires some deeper thought. However, far more than some are willing to give it. It's quite a dark film, and maybe not what the audience was hoping for exactly.
I enjoyed this one from Ridley; although, "Miami Vice" (2006), is among my favorite movies, too.

Admin2KNov-18-2013 4:14 PM@Sawa; She really does love that car, litterally. :P
From what I understand the movie is set up as a metaphor or allegory, I forget which. Anyways here, so gorgeous:

Also, I am certain Ridley got the idea for Cameron's character's tattoos and cat obsession from a woman featured in this do***entary. She appears about halfway through. I watched it a few months ago and when The Counselor came out I was stunned at the similarities, no car humping in this though:

Yes, she definitely had her way with it. When I first caught the news of Diaz + Ferrari, I automatically figured it would've been her going down on a floor-box gear-shift. Much like the urban-legend of the boyfriend that secretly doses his girlfriend with 'Spanish Fly', and then leaves her to get some snacks from the Drive-In concessions. Only to return to find her dead, and from uncontrollably bleepin' the gear-shift to death. I was paranoid that someone would dose me with that, or something similar. =P
I never thought a grind against a windshield was in-store, quite original. And she did '***', many chuckles about that in the theater. I've had several cars I really liked too, but never thought to have sex with them. I ended-up with being frightened of one ...big engine rumbling directly behind my head. There was a photographer that I was very fond of, seduced me into buying one of his cars. And as he was in an uncomfortable jam for money. I almost killed myself, in the rare times, I took that overpowered beast-machine out. :O He thought that was very amusing, too (hot bastard). :I
I think that 'Character Backstory' cut from the film, is quite telling of what kind of man the Counselor really is. One certainly need beware of men, like that (wants it all). I've also known two women that were scary smart man-eaters, very close in personality to Diaz's character. Both enormously successful, and at the incredible expense of others (minus any 'Meow Mix'). =D Cheetah/Leopard, etc. fashion (Sex-Kitten) has been quite prevalent for a longtime. I would think many similar examples could be found. Not so sure about Becky there, mentally (see the body-art connection); although, for sure one strange kitty.
I should also point-out that the photographs of the Ferrari 512 S Berlinetta Special (& fashion model) were internationally famous. Wallposters from the shoot were commonly available (in the 1970s). And this is how I know of that particular concept car; for the sake of making a bit of joke, I left out that detail. My Father knew these kinds of cars well, as do many men that have an appreciation for exotic machines. Some of that rubbed-off on me, too. I fancy the origami inspired, aggressive styling of several 1970s exotics the most. ;)
I went into the theater not even seeing the trailer, so I really had zero idea about what was going to transpire at all (aside from Diaz's car-sex). There are some good bits within these promotional videos (however, full of spoilers):

Admin2KNov-19-2013 5:40 PMI never thought I would have an opportunity to link this video again, but I do. Strange times.

I agree, those old photos were no doubt an inspiration to Ridley as well, esp the Tiger print dress, but the tattoos he def got from the Cat lady in the link I posted "Pure Nature Specials : Animal Imitators".

I saw a YouTube video of Cameron's sex scene but it's been taken down. I haven't seen the actual movie yet, i'll wait for the DVD. Awesome links Sawa, gonna watch em now. :)

MemberNoobNov-21-2013 7:17 AMWell, when you do get to seeing it, I believe it's one you will enjoy. I feel it's definitely one of Ridley's better films in sometime. It almost seems like a Michael Mann film, in style. And yes, one could guess that the Ferrari concept photographs, might have had some influence on the car-sex scene.

A bit that Ridley pulled from his subconscious, or even something that he knew that made some fantastic impression on his brother. As that concept car was regarded as the crown jewel of Ferraris, once. They might have even joked about the woman, being all over the car; as if she was trying to get-off on it (one drunken night, smoking cigars). Undoubtedly, both of them were aware of that car photographer, and his work. It was a much smaller world in those days, regarding print media. We all saw the same things more so then, compared to now. Or to say, we all drew from a far smaller cache of influential data, in the past.

Anyway, the film was dedicated to Tony Scott, and I would imagine Ridley put something in there, that Tony would've gotten a kick out of (wish you were here). And that car-sex scene with the Ferrari, is likely it. For certain, it would interesting to know the details, in how the scene came about. From what I was able to gather, it's a script that Ridley thought was good to go. And without any heavy modifications.
