This is why I loved the movie so much! Otachi stayed on her mission; from beginning to end! 1. Otachi's prime objective was to find Dr. Newton Geiszler because he had figured a way to tap into the Kaiju consciousness Remember, as soon as Striker Eureka was disabled by Leather Back's chemical reaction induced EMP wave, she turned and headed towards Hong Kong after Newton. 2. As with most creatures, flight takes a huge amount of energy to get airborne. Otachi didn't take flight until she was at point where she had no other option. This also shows the intelligence of the Kaiju (Daikaiju). They just aren't some big huge brutes from the Godzilla Universe of Diakaiju, but a thinking and adapting breed of creatures. Just as Gypsy Danger couldn't use the swords around the populated areas due to the toxic nature of the Kaiju blood (Kaiju Blue) getting all over everything, Otachi HAD to take flight in a last ditch effort to breach the hull of Gypsy and then take its crew skyward in hopes of exhausting their air and killing them. Again, Kaiju are VERY intelligent and yes they know these Jaegers are piloted by tiny hairless apes who call themselves humans. 3. How else was Gypsy Danger going to be in a position to 'Form Voltron' 80,000' above the Earth's surface unless Otachi took Gypsy there! Let me state this for the record, when Raleigh Becket said to Mako that they were out of options, and she then replied, no there is one option left, proceeded over to the control panel, pushed the button with the label, 'SWORD', and Gypsy extended her sword and 'formed' Voltron; mentally I orgasmed! That was simply the most awesome thing I have ever seen in sci-fi motion pictures. It rivals the photon missiles down the Death Star's exhaust tubes. It rivals the E.T. emerging out of the mother ship in Close Encounters. It even tops the Pegasus flying between two Base Stars and launching its missiles at point blank range in an attempt to get at Boltar's Base Star. One could say, well in Star Wars, why didn't the rebels just attack the Death Star exhaust port; why all the tractor beam, light sabre fights? Movie could have been over in 15 minutes or less. You have to let things work themselves out. Don't think, just enjoy Pacific Rim! I get so upset when people are trying to find all these flaws in the movie. Just sit back, load the DVD into the player when it arrives next month, get a few beers, and revel in that which is Pacific Rim... I know I will! Lynx Foxtrot out

Otachi didn't 'wait' for her acid sack and tail to be destroyed before flying. Before that happened Otachi was actually giving as good as she got from Gypsy Danger. If Otachi had actually hit the Jaeger with her acid spray it would of been all over for Gypsy. Taking flight was in response to a disastrous 30 seconds where Otachi lost both her main weapons. Then she pulled out her ace. It nearly worked.

As GC pointed out, and agrees with me, flight was a last ditch desperation maneuver on the part of Otachi. Otachi, IMHO, was the most DANGEROUS of all DaiKaiju. She was more mental than physical (as are all females in the animal world). She was cunning and calculating and showed it several times in the film. It seems that she had to regenerate her caustic spray, and that was her downfall. If she could have rapid fired that nasty spit of hers, the battle may have gone differently. Chernov Alpha was slow and couldn't evade her acid spray. Gypsy and Striker once they were aware of her attack, could easily dodge it. I have often wondered why they sent Otachi in pregnant. Was it a way to get an extra Kaiju through the Breach? So maybe the plan was to get 2.5 Kaiju through for the price of just 2. In the final battle, Slattern was late to the party. Was this because he was a Category 5 and it just took longer for a more massive kaiju to come through the Breach? Remember, Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, predicted 3 Kaiju exiting the Breach, but they were staggered some what. Pound for pound, Otachi was a nasty B I T C H! In order of overall threat, I would rate Slattern as the number 1 threat, followed by Otachi as #2. Leather Back was a simple 'pound and ground' affair ... he wasn't to bright, but it took a lot to finish him. Otachi ... I respect her. Lynx Foxtrot out

Yep Otachi didn't wait to get her tail and sack ripped of but think about it if you're in air you use a lot of energy but you are open to the Jaegers view. Like one of the scientists said Kaijus learn and pass info thru the hive mind so I'm sure she knew that Gypsy had a plasma shooter so on the ground she can hide and strike but on the air she is visible to Gypsy. Flight was more likely her last option to try to destroy Gypsy.

Otachi didn;t wait as many other people said. If it was waiting, she would have waited when the jaegers appeared to the ocean, not while fighting gypsy. Also, kaiju is attacking Earth to occupy it, not to die there. Why would they wait to get their main weapons to be eliminated? p.s:This is my opinion-Otachi could have detected that she will die, so she flew up to the sky thinking 'lets die together!'(this is my opinion, only my opinion. Only the team that made Pacific Rim will know)

well it stiil makes no sense to me because the kaiju are there to terraform the planet so causeing mass destruction would work the best. having not had her acid sack and tail ripped off, otachi would have been able to kill newton faster if she had helped take out the gipsy with leatherback they would have not died and failed. and no feebs you may not om nom my face

DK, But Otachi didn't know that Gypsy was coming. Once Leather Back disabled Striker, there was no threat and she went back on mission. Top priority was to find and kill Newton, not to take out other Jaegers. Kaiju were not there to terraform Earth, WE had already done it for them, well global warming is a myth used to control people and resources, but the movie suggested that because of the temps, and atmospheric make up, the Anteversians could now move in. The Kaiju were just sent to get rid of the current tenants ... US! If Otachi delays, Newton is on a fast plane, copter, car, train beyond her reach. She stayed on target and almost killed Newton. Gypsy is 15 seconds later, and Newton is dead. We really needed to see a two-on-one between Slattern , Gypsy, and Striker. Now that would have been a battle royal worth the price of admission! Otachi's tail was frozen off ... my that port side coolant must be some cold *^$%! Lynx Foxtrot out
