Too young for the movie?

My 5-year old is obsessed with Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Ultraman, and really wants me to take him to see Pacific Rim today. It is rated PG-13, but I'm assuming this is simply because of the violence between the kaiju and jaegers. He handles fictional violence like this well and has watched all of the recent Marvel movies (Captain America, all Iron Man pics, Hulk, Thor, Avengers) without a problem. That said, I will not show him any of the Dark Knight movies because I feel they are too dark and the violence is too realistic. For those who have seen it, any advice on taking him? Should I or should I not? Is the rating simply for fighting scenes or is there more I should be aware of (language, gore, etc.)? Any direction is helpful. Thanks!

If you let your young one see Avengers then I don't see why you would object to Pacific Rim. Its about the same level of cartoon violence.

mhh.. didn't see it yet, but here is rated to, over 7 years old. ^^ Go to see it and then you could take your kid and see it again. PR rated: over 7 yo

Well, PG 13 means that he has to be 13 to see it by himself, with PG though, he can see it under that age... the only problem id have with bringing a child of that age to Pacific rim, would have to be the possibility of nightmares, Now i dont have a kid, but i remember as a kid getting nightmares from movies like this, But if he wants to see it on his own opinion, i think he might be okay, if he wants to see it on his own, that would imply that he might be ready to brave any content of uh... i dunno spookieness? IDK.... If he really wants to see it... let him see it... or as **AI** suggested go see it first, then bring him to see it... or just see it together... your choice

So we just got back and he loved it. No foul language, gore, or realistic violence. To be honest, the previews were most age inappropriate part of the experience. *spoiler alert* The only parts that made him a bit uneasy were the flashback scene and the scene where Hannibal gets eaten. I explained that the flashback scene was just a memory and not real and he handled it well. The surprise at the end with Hannibal resolved the second uneasy moment. * End spoiler alert* Overall, he and I both loved it and he can't wait for Godzilla and hopefully a sequel. We rushed to Toys r Us immediately afterward to buy Knifehead and Gypsy Danger toys.

I think it's fine. No profanity aside from the word "ass" and the violence isn't too graphic. Just FUN. I think your 5 year old will enjoy this film. But to be on the safe side, maybe go see it without him to start, and judge for yourself.

Being a Godzilla fan and my cousin's son being a newbie to the fandom. He knows it's just fiction. He found Godzilla funny, two guy in costumes beating each other up. :)
