MemberNoobJul-12-2013 12:28 AMWhat did everybody think of the film? If you're reading this without having seen it, be wary of spoilers!
I just got home from seeing it, and my heart is still RACING from how great the movie truly was. It will take a few watches before I can say it's my favorite Kaiju film, but it will be up there.
The guys at ILM are absolutely brilliant, and masters of their craft. I can't say I've ever seen a film really make the creatures feel and look just HUGE. The way the camera is positioned for certain shots, mixed with amazing lighting just adds an incredible layer to Jaeger and Kaiju alike. On top of that, the fluidity during fights is just astounding! The Jaegers honestly feel like they're 2,000 lbs of metal , with creaks, and groans with every movement. Every punch is heavy, and earth shattering. The fight in Hong Kong may be one of the greatest fight sequences in cinema history, IMO.
I was worried about the acting in the movie after reading so many harsh reviews, but after seeing the movie, I honestly don't see why there is as much hate. No, they're not going to be win any awards for the script, or the actors for their delivery, but it is no where near bad enough to detract points from the film. Another worry I had before seeing the film was the absolutely zany character Newt, portrayed by Charlie Day. I was concerned that he might cheese it up in a bad way with his spastic speeches and eccentric actions, but damn did Charlie Day deliver! He had everyone in the theater cracking up throughout the movie, and it really added another layer to the film. I wish the film had somehow given us a little more insight on the other Jaeger pilots, but I still enjoyed everyone.
My only one true complaint for the film would be the final 20 minutes or so. I will refrain from major reveals, but the last battle just did not give me the awe and excitement that I felt with the Hong Kong battle. It felt a little too quick to reach a climax, and one of the cooler Kaiju doesn't get a chance it deserved to shine.
But aside from that, the movie was just flawless. It will be a true shame if this film doesn't make enough to warrant a sequel, as it could grow into a fantastic, and expansive world. Fingers crossed folks, because this is a breath of fresh air.

MemberNoobJul-12-2013 3:27 AMI as well just got back from the opening night showing, and all I have to say is WOW!
Mr. Guillermo del Toro has done an exceptional job with this film, with both Jaeger, Kaiju concepts, story, and the whole film practically.
I love how each Jaeger was explained (even though I knew a fair amount about them already) in the film, and how each has its own unique fighting style.
In terms of the Kaiju, all I can say for those who haven't seen it yet, is that you have to see it (mostly in IMAX) to "feel" the power of each creature.
I'm no film critic, but I had high expectations for the film going in, came out even more satisfied.... I still have the adrenalin rush from the whole experience of the film!
In other words: GO SEE IT if you want to

MemberNoobJul-12-2013 5:40 AMI got my ticket n my seat right in the middle of the big IMAX screen n then it started n then 2 hrs passed in 2 minutes. This was the best experience I've had in a IMAX film... Yes yes it was perfect and everything n more that I was expecting. So much so that when I came out after the screening it was night n it was raining just like the many battles in the movie and I could see the sea line on my way back home n I must say It felt like a Kaiju head will appear from the sea anytime now. All in all I'll remember this for a long time...Cheers Guillermo n the team behind the film... Hope it makes tons of money so that we get multiple sequels...

MemberNoobJul-12-2013 6:51 AMI read on one of the Twitter posts here about something after the credits end. What is it? A Godzilla trailer?

In the middle of the credits there's a small bonus scene with a character you believed dead, but after the credits there a nice dedication to Ishiro Honda.

MemberNoobJul-12-2013 5:06 PMAm I the only one who thought the movie was sub-par?
If you ask me, the dialogue was dull throughout the entire film. Acting was okay, but the script needed some serious work. The only lines I thought were truly organic were the ones spoken by the scientists, too many one-liners from the rest of the cast.
All the kaijus looked the same. Throughout the kaiju genre's history there has been a strong emphasis on unique kaiju designs (see: the entire cast of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters & Final Wars). Every monster in the movie was gray with a little bit of bio-luminescence.
And then they tried to make the kaiju into an even bigger threat. Godzilla monsters have been used by aliens as weapons before, and I wouldn't have minded that too much in Pacific Rim, but they took it a step further and decided that the kaijus were the weapons of a multiversal alien race--who, evidently, sent the dinosaurs as colonists, but couldn't handle the Earth's atmosphere.
The dinosaur part was exceptionally ridiculous. When you are forced to throw millions of years of concrete evolutionary history out the door for your movie to make sense, that's when I think it's time for a ****ing rewrite.
In the end though, overlooking the blatant mistakes Del Toro made, I think it was a decent kaiju movie. It had good CGI and even better action. A solid plot isn't really the norm in kaiju movies anyway, I just expected more. Del Toro would have been better off if he had tried to reimagine the genre, rather than reinvent it.

MemberNoobJul-13-2013 12:23 AMWhile I did love the movie I had a few problems due to the fact that I write a bit of Scifi myself.
The scene where Gipsy Danger drags the ship and uses it like a bat was ridiculous! You could never lift a ship from one end without it folding up like wet paper! There is just not enough structural strength! When I saw that in the trailer I cringed. Second, the scene where Gipsy was falling and you had that reentry fire. You would never get that from falling from 50,000 feet! You have to be moving much faster to get that.
One last thing: If the dang sword was so effective then why did they wait until they were in trouble before breaking it out? And why did Raleigh not even know about it? Shouldn't the pilot be familiar with the weapons systems?

MemberNoobJul-13-2013 5:40 AMI thought the fire on his descent was rather head scratching, but that, like the tanker bat, were probably used just for show, without really getting into the realism of it.
As for the sword, I feel like Raleigh may have been unaware of it. He had only been in Gipsy once in 5 years prior to the Hong Kong battle, and that was just to make sure everything was functioning. Since Mako panicked, they didn't have a chance to really look into the other systems, and you have to remember that Gipsy may not have had that sword when Raleigh and Yancy piloted it.

MemberNoobJul-13-2013 12:06 PMSorry to nitpick Mega Bear, but Dinosaurs aren't Kaju. He said the Kaju were sent to Earth millions of years ago, but they didn't like the atmospheric conditions at the time, so they waited until it became more favorable.

I didn't say the dinosaurs were kaiju. I said they were colonists for the multiversal alien race, which was stated directly in the movie.

MemberNoobJul-13-2013 2:20 PMi loved it! my theater was shaking so damned hard it felt like i was in the jaeger too! charlie was my favorite part, loved his character and a big fan of his. he is enjoyable in every show and movie i have seen him in, he is very funny and personable naturally. the way he tells stories in interviews gets the whole audience to laugh, great delivery.
also loved the mid credits scene!!! i thought that was going to happen anyway but in a different part of the movie. i thought right away "i doubt that character would be taken down that easily".

MemberNoobJul-13-2013 7:00 PMHaving just seen it again, I don't see where the "Dinosaurs are alien colonists" thing is coming from. Newt did say they came to earth when the dinosaurs were alive, but the atmosphere wasn't useful to them then, but nothing about leaving them here. It's entirely possibly he was alluding to the Kaiju being the reason for the mass extinction event of the dinosaurs, which is theorized to be due to an asteroid hitting in the Pacific Ocean (one theory, anyway). I don't think the scene was explained very well, so it could be open to several different explanations.
Anyway, I just came back from seeing it on Imax 3D...what an absolute brain melting experience. I also enjoyed the movie even more on a second viewing. The things I originally wasn't a huge fan of were still there, but knowing they occurred made it a little easier, and more enjoyable. I was also lucky enough to snag one of the Imax posters that was left over, which is even better.
I'll be seeing the movie again in two weeks, and I cannot wait. I've never had this feeling about a movie before, and it could be the kaiju fanboy in me speaking, but DAMN do I love this.

MemberNoobJul-15-2013 12:57 AMVery enjoyable overall.
Incredible CGI and action, with interesting designs of Kaiju and Jaegers. Mostly nonstop excitement and a visual feast.
Acting was nothing special but not bad enough to put me off. Hannibal could have been a bigger player. The scientists kind of annoyed me at first but over time it got to be OK. It seems I'm the odd one out who didn't love Charlie's performance. If it had been toned down just a little, I think it would have been better. Idris was cool.
I do get the feeling though, if they'd spent another $20-30m and put someone into the lead role that commands a following, it would have been worth the spend. I mean, the ultimate for box office is probably Tom Cruise, but he'd probably cost more than that. But you get the idea. Keanu Reeves, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and many others, IMHO would have been a bigger draw than the lead guy (sorry, I know he's a famous TV guy but I haven't seen Sons of Anarchy and just didn't find his acting that great in this movie), and potentially better acting (well OK don't expect too much from Keanu but he fits his roles well).
I agree with some other comments that the final "boss" fight should have been far more awesome. It did give the impression of budget starting to run out. The HK fight was great but if they'd reserved that impact/budget for the final fight, i.e. reversed the investment/quality between the two fights, it would have been better. Best, of course, is that both fights would be top notch.
The other crews and 'bots didn't get enough of a showing. The Russians and Chinese didn't even say a word, I think. And they died too easily. I know that screen time was limited, but I would have liked just a little more of them. I'm not sure they got to fire all their weapons (someone can correct me) but I think that the movie should have demonstrated their powers. A last design niggle: each robot seems to have only 2-3 powers which seems limited compared to my idea of what you could arm a huge robot with. Danger at least had 3, by my count: Sword (2), Chest Turbine, Plasma Cannon (2). You would think though, if Striker has missiles that can kill a Kaiju, wouldn't you mount a shoulder launcher on every robot? I know, I'm being too logical... The same might apply to Leatherback's EMP.
As with all movies, the choices are made for dramatic effect and don't always get with reality or logic so we need to suspend disbelief. These are only minor niggles. Someone else mentioned the sword and why it wasn't used from the beginning of each fight. Great point - it's like a samurai engaging in a fist fight, then pulling out his sword for the kill at the end.
Another odd thing was that they can track the Kaiju but then the robots go and engage them up close rather than shoot them from a distance. Again it makes for much better cinema but come on... the Kaiju jump out of the water and surprise the good guys at HK.
I wonder if people are going to dissect and rip this movie to shreds over the next few weeks the way they did to Prometheus?
Despite various odd things, I enjoyed the movie immensely and am looking forward to the sequel.

MemberNoobJul-18-2013 4:57 AMThe movie was a tad predictable and way too "American Robot saves the day" but otherwise, I loved it. Awesome visuals, awesome lore, great photography. I'm in my late 20s and all I want is get as much merchandise as I can. Already got the 360 game as we speak... now waiting for the art book and comic :)
