I think.. this is explained in the graphic novel, [i]Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero[/i] which comes out next week. It explains a lot of information regarding the events prior to those which take place in [b]Pacific Rim[/b].

It's somewhere in 2020 or something. Because the most recent Jaeger (Striker Eureka) was designed in 2019.

I think I´ve read somewhere that takes place in 2024 but I wanted to check it out with you guys who the are experts.... we´ll have to wait until the novel comes out then....
