It really sets up the mood of the film for the audience.I remember being an usher in a theatre when it opened.Some people didn't really understand what the film was going to be about ,but when the film started they were glued to the screen...along with the 15 year old usher who was loitering at the back of the cinema instead of vacuuming the lobby :)

I might be wrong but wasn't Ridley originally going to use the "tear drop" credit sequence? I've always been fond of that opening.
