Earlier this year Colin Trevorrow's latest addition to the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World, went on to break many box office records despite criticisms from some fans that the movie rehashed many ideas from the 1993 original. Jurassic Worlds domination of last summers cinemas continued when the sequel went on to become the third most successful movie in worldwide box office earnings, amassing an amazing $1.66 billion, and thus relugating Marvel Studios 2012 epic Avengers to fourth place.

2015 also saw the Avengers sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the latest instalment in the Too Fast Too Furious franchise, Furious 7 (the last to star the late Paul Walker) earn over $1 billion in worldwide box office takings and establish themselves a place in the top ten most successful movies of all time.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened in theatres worldwide by December 18th. The first movie since 1983 to feature original cast members Harrison Ford (Han Solo, pictured below), Carrie Fisher (General Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), The Force Awakens has been the surrounded by much hope, hype and expectation, especially when considering the lukewarm critical and fan opinion of the Prequel trilogy.

After an expertly managed marketing campaign that kept many of the movies twists and revelations under wraps The Force Awakens opening the weekend before the festive holidays breaking box office records both domestically and worldwide, despite as with Jurassic World before it criticisms of recycled elements from the 1977 original. This week, after less than a month since its release, J.J. Abrams addition to the Star Wars saga has, after opening to $53 million in China and bringing its worlwdie earnings to $1.7 billion, has surpassed Jurassic World, taking its position as the third most successful movie of all time, so far.
With the movies theatrical run far from over, all that remains now for The Force Awakens is to surpass the two most successful movies in the top ten list; 1997's Titanic and 2009's Avatar, both of which were directed by legendary sci fi writer and director James Cameron (The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, The Abyss).
