Released in December 2009, James Camerons Avatar starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, earned nearly $750 million over the course of its marathon seven month theatrical run, becoming the most successful movie ever (not accounting for inflation) in both the US and worldwide.
James Camerons Avatar is starting to feel the pressure!
J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, released December 18th 2015 has, in less than a months time, earned nearly $760 million (as of yesterday) at the US box office, dethroning James Camerons environmental epic as the most successful movie ever released in the US.
Worldwide however the seventh episode in the long running Star Wars saga has, so far, climbed up to the position of the fourth most successful movie ever in worldwide box office takings, having earned $1.56 billion globally. Though the movie has yet to finish its theatrical run, and will be released this weekend in China, which has recently become one of the most lucrative markets for high profile Hollywood movie releases.
To dethrone Avatar completely, and to become the most successful movie of all time, worldwide, The Force Awakens must, by the end of its theatrical run and across all markets earn at least another 1.3 billion. Having smashed virtually all of the opening milestone records both in the US and worldwide, and with Chinese audiences typically doubling the box office takings for high profile Hollywood movies we predict that within the next month Star Wars: The Force Awakens will stand as the most successful movie ever released worldwide.
