Unlike most superheroes, which are usually created by one or two people, Marvel Comics' premier antihero Venom was born from the collaboration of many minds. Venoms costume was reportedly designed by Marvel Comics fan Randy Schueller, with Marvel artist Mike Zeck and Marvel writer David Michelinie working together with former Marvel alum and creator of Spawn Todd McFarlane to realize the character for his first appearance in issue 300 of The Amazing Spider-Man, which was released in May 1988. So it is fitting that characters first title big screen adaptation will hit theaters next October marking the character thirtieth anniversary as one of Spider-Man's most memorable, recognizable antagonists. So successful has Venom been that he has sired a whole new branch of characters since his creation known as Symbiotes which include characters such as Carnage, Anti-Venom, Toxin, Scream, Hybrid, and Payback.
Previously reported to be cast in the role of Eddie Brock and Venom, British actor Tom Hardy has also had his fair share of success portraying iconic fictional characters in movies such as Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max Fury Road, Warrior, Inception, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Hardy has also achieved critical acclaim for his portrayal of historical figures such as both of the Kray Twins in 2015's Legend, as the treacherous John Fitzgerald in 2015's Revenant, as RAF pilot Farrier in 2017's Dunkirk, and as notorious prisoner Michael Gordon Peterson AKA Charles Bronson in 2008's Bronson. With other impressive performances in movies such as Child 44 opposite Noomi Rapace, as Handsome Bob in Guy Ritchie's' RocknRolla, opposite Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Nemesis, and his movie debut in Ridley Scotts' Black Hawk Down, Tom Hardy has earned his reputation as one of the Britians greatest actors.
So it should come as no surprise then that the aforementioned Venom co-creator Todd McFarlane recently stated that he expects great things from Hardy's portrayal of Venom while being interviewed by Screen Rant at the recent New York Comic-Con...
“It’ll be interesting. I’ve seen some movies of his where he can bring anger and a wide personality to it. To me, I think Tom Hardy’s going to be as good as whatever Venom looks like. We all know Tom’s going to act. He’s going to do a good job. So now what’s Venom gonna’ look like? It’s an R-rated movie, how ‘R’ are they going to go? To me, that’s the question. Are they going to go a ‘little bit R’? Venom’s a monster to me, and to me – are they going to make him a monster or are they going to make him a man? Are they going to humanize him? That’s what we gotta’ find out.”
We here at Scified agree with McFarlane that Hardy's Venom could be one of the best comic book character portrayals to date. However, we feel that the weak link that could jeopardize the entire movie is Studio Sony Pictures Entertainment, one of Hollywoods poorest performing production and distribution studios with recent failures such as RoboCop, Ghostbusters, Passengers, and The Dark Tower. Together with executive producer and former Sony Chairperson Amy Pascal (who was sacked from said position in 2015 for mismanagement of the studio) being attached to the movie, we are still on the fence as to whether or not the growingly impressive cast and director Ruben Fleischer can overcome the studios failings and politics and avoid a repeat of 2007's Spider-Man 3 (pictured above).
