Netflix has become a powerhouse when it comes to sci-fi TV series and movies. However, we all know that it’s a hit-and-miss at times, and that’s totally normal. However, over the years that I’ve been following their sci-fi TV series releases, there were a lot that stood out. And by that, I don’t simply mean that they became trending or a part of the top 10 that time. I literally mean they were so good they stuck with me years after I watched it.
Before I share my favorite sci-fi TV series on Netflix, I’d like to remind you that if you’re planning to binge-watch these series, you must have a fast internet connection like Hughesnet to actually understand and enjoy the show. Just a friendly advice! Anyways, let’s start.
Black Mirror
Seasons: 6 | Total Episodes: 27
Black Mirror is still a top-tier sci-fi TV series, and I don’t think anything can beat it right now. Unlike typical TV series, Black Mirror's episodes are standalone stories. They are mostly about technology and how these advancements affect relationships, societies, and our own minds. It shows the potential consequences of digital obsession, which is what's happening right now in the world we're living in. It's kind of scary because there's a big possibility that it would happen in the future, especially at the rate our technology is evolving right now.
Black Mirror is not available on other streaming services right now as it is a Netflix Original, but hopefully, it’ll be available on other platforms because it’s sooo good.
The Umbrella Academy
Seasons: 4 | Total Episodes: 36
If you enjoy a combination of family drama, powers, romance, and time traveling, you will love The Umbrella Academy. It's about seven adopted siblings who were raised by a billionaire to save the world. Every sibling has a unique power that could literally change the world. But, siblings aren't siblings if there's no constant bickering. And somehow, they always find themselves at the center of an impending apocalypse. This TV series is funny yet sentimental since it’s still about family, but the Hargreeves family is surely a special one.
Alice in Borderland
Seasons: 2 | Total Episodes: 16
If you're a gamer like me, you'll find this Japanese sci-fi series exciting. Just writing about this TV series is already making me giddy because I love this show so much. Alice in Borderland is about a young gamer named Arisu who found himself competing in deadly games to survive. Unfortunately, losing in this game means death, and there's no extra lives. Similar to Black Mirror, this is also exclusive to Netflix so it’s highly likely that it’s not available on other streaming deals.
Snowpiercer
Seasons: 6 | Total Episodes: 27
I’ve watched the Snowpiercer movie before I was able to watch the series, and I’m glad I did because I don’t think I’ll ever appreciate the film if I watched this first. It’s about a world frozen over due to a failed climate experiment. The remaining survivors are now living on a constantly moving train called Snowpiercer. The train is divided by class, the rich and powerful at the front while the poor are crammed at the back. But things start to change when a rebellion rises. For the most part, it's about political struggles and moral dilemmas as they fight the injustice within the train.
Final Thoughts
There are a lot of good sci-fi TV series on Netflix that are worth your time. Of course, there will still be some that are disappointing and a waste of time, but personally, I think there are more worthy than ones that aren’t. I hope you watch these titles. You won’t regret watching them. Happy streaming!
