Guillermo del Toro's epic 2013 Jaeger vs Kaiju science fiction extravaganza Pacific Rim, while being one of the more original and fun science fiction movies of recent years, didn't quite make the impact in worldwide box office sales as Warner Bros. would have preferred; only amassing a $411 milion income against a $190 million budget. When compared to Godzilla 2014's figures of $529 million in box office sales against a budget of $160 million, it becomes clear from a financial point of view at least, that of the two properties Godzilla is the more profitable, and therefore the property most likely to be continued.
With Legenday Pictures and Warner Bros. seemingly exploring the possibility of a King Kong and Godzilla crossover, some Kaiju fans may have liked to see Guillermo's towering metal gladiators joining the fray in an epic cinematic triple threat, but news from Legendary and Warner, sourced from THR suggests that because of Pacific Rims lacklustre domestic performance the movie which was originally reported to have been delayed may now be on indefinite hold.
Even worse, recently Legendary stated to Guillermo that the future of Hellboy 3 relied on the performance of Maelstrom. A sad day for science fiction and comic book fans, a sad day indeed!
