At CinemaCon today, it was announced that the sequel to 2013's popular Pacific Rim movie, Pacific Rim 2, would be released on August 4th, 2017, a 4-month delay from its original release date of April 7th, 2017. Guillermo del Toro is still expected to direct the sequel and the story, by Zack Penn and Del Toro will focus primarily on the Kaiju's origins as well as how the world responds to the aftermath of the events which took place in the first movie. He was recently quoted saying:
"Obviously as you can imagine, there’s going to be a lot more about the Kaiju and their origins, and the world will be in a very different state when we get to this movie. He and Travis created this enormous universe that’s pretty much like multiple movies smashes into one. So with Pacific Rim, you could just assume that all the specific tropes of the movie, like the giant robots and the giant monsters and all the technology around it, is going o be explored in more depth. That’s just where we’re going. But I’m not going to tell you the story cuz that would just ruin it."
Regarding the sequel, Guillermo del Toro had also revealed:
"It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”
“I think that two of our main characters, like in the first one, are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing, along with Hannibal Chau, so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn's] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him. You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of robots, I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”
Whether Charlie Hunnam or Rinko Kikuchi return has also yet to be confirmed.
