Guillermo del Toro is the man responsible for introducing Pacific Rim to the world back in 2013. It was because of his unique vision and aesthetic preferences that Pacific Rim made the impact it did, guaranteeing it a sequel which arrives next March. Although Del Toro did not return to direct the sequel Pacific Rim Uprising, he did remain on as a producer for the film. However, since Pacific Rim 2 found a new home at Universal, fans were worried his involvement would be lacking throughout production. During a press junket earlier this year however, it was clarified just how involved Guillermo was during the production of Uprising. Producer Cale Boyter explained:
He’s been involved from the different ideas, weighing in, the different drafts. We send him all the visuals and everything. He loves Boyega. Obviously all the stuff he looked at he’s touched and noted. He hasn’t been here yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point he ends up here. Moves things around and I’ll be like ‘No, go back over there.'
It sounds like Del Toro had some input but likely not as much as many of us were hoping for. Already, fans have noticed distinct differences, aesthetically between Pacific Rim and its sequel, but that is to be expected with a new director. Whether or not it lives up to the original obviously has yet to be seen, but we trust Steven DeKnight has done this budding franchise justice in honoring Del Toro's original vision.
What do you think of Boyter's comments? How do you compare the trailer for Uprising to that of the original so far? Let us know in the comments!
