The Men in Black Franchise has been silent since the attempted revival in 2019’s Men in Black International. Deadline is reporting that a new installment of the franchise is in development, with screenwriter Chris Bremner is on board to pen the screenplay Bremner is best known for writing the film Bad Boys for Life, and Bad Boys: Ride or die.
Deadline is also reporting that Will Smith is being courted to return in the sequel as Agent J. No further plot details were given. However, Deadline’s sources stress that Smith will not commit to the project without reading the script. It is entirely possible that should Smith pass on the role, that the studio may shop the part to another actor.
Sony is reported to be very interested in reviving the Men in Black Franchise. Deadline points out that the franchise has made 1.9 billion globally at the box office. Men in Black could also add to Sony’s collection of franchiseable films, in a time of many legacy sequels being produced. The core concept definitely has many possibilities.
So far, no talent or other production crew have joined the production. The success of this franchise appears to depend on how well the Bremner script is received. Perhaps what is needed for the Men in Black films to be successful is to look at what worked for other long running franchises and take lessons from them.
Perhaps the closest comparison can be said to be Ghostbusters, which was able to recover from an attempted reboot with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Would you be up for a renewal of the franchise or not? Let us know!
