Recently the producer of the original Men in Black Trilogy spoke to the publication Newsbeat concerning some of the details of the new Men in Black Movie. This information comes on the verge of heightened speculation regarding the movie, especially in light of news that the next movie would be rebooted as a trilogy without Will Smith. In addition, there have also been speculation that the franchise would crossover with '21 Jump Street' as well. Her comments have been reproduced below with some essential clarification.
""There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film]," producer Laurie MacDonald told Newsbeat.
MacDonald and her husband Walter Parkes, who worked on the three original films, are behind the new movie.
At one stage it was reported Will Smith would not feature this time but Parkes said: "Never count Will out."
It seems that the new movie will indeed have a female agent in a possibly lead role. The first movie ended with the implication that the sequel would feature the return of Agent L. In addition, the third movie prominently featured a woman as head of the MIB agency. It would change up the formula of the movies to feature a woman agent, but maybe this change is for the better. With a reinvention of the franchise, a new dynamic may be required. We still have no information other then the gender of the lead, so maybe it is better to wait for a casting announcement before declaring the merits of this news.
In addition, the news that Will Smith may still be attached is intriguing. Previous reports had Will Smith not attached to the continuing franchise. This may mean that the new trilogy is not a complete reboot, if Will Smith is indeed involved. If he is, it may suggest a continuity within the films. Will Smith may reprise his role as Agent J, possibly in a mentoring role. This is all speculation though, and is very contingent on whether Will Smith is actually returning.
