It's been common knowledge for some time now that while 20th Century Fox pursue and produce Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, that the hotly discussed Alien 5 film by Neill Blomkamp would be put on hold. This of course is not holding Blomkamp back from attempting new film endeavors as he proved yesterday evening by sharing a photo to his personal Instagram account of a new project he's currently working on. Neill made sure to acknowledge that the photo had no relation to his Alien project, which he had teased artwork for extensively throughout this past year.
The image clearly depicts a deformed humanoid face - almost like multiple faces have been merged together. Blomkamp left little else to go on for what the image is for, but we can assume more details will arise soon enough.
As for the state of Alien 5, countless interviews with the cast and those involved in its (currently halted) production insinuate that Blomkamp is still very much in board as the film's eventual director. However, with Alien: Covenant taking center stage, releasing next August, it's likely we won't see Alien 5 start moving again until late 2018 or even 2019, assuming Blomkamp's new project wraps up well before then.
Though Chappie and Elysium didn't shatter records or prove to be all that successful with critics, we're still quite intrigued to see what Neill comes up with for this new project. Could this be early work for a District 9 sequel?
