Here at Scified, we only answer the serious questions.
We’re dedicated to looking at the latest and greatest in science fiction and pop culture. Sci fi, after all, is one of the most thrilling genres when it comes to fiction, as it’s packed full of innovative writers and creative directors. There are so many interesting debates and serious discussions to be had when it comes to sci fi; which is why, today, we’re looking at space weed.
No, we’re not joking.
In this blog post today, we’re going to be going over whether the Star Wars universe has cannabis in it. We’ll be looking at the closest substances that match up with cannabis, and considering how they might be portrayed in the films. Cannabis is a hot topic right now, especially within the medical and healthcare industries.
We’ll also be looking at other substances in the Star Wars universe, and where else cannabis has been featured in the world of pop culture as well. As much as it may seem like a funny subject, there are some genuine benefits to featuring cannabis and CBD in pop culture- so we’ll be finishing up with a look at that as well.
Is there cannabis in the Star Wars universe?
From what we can tell (and from our research on this Reddit thread)- yes.
Marcan herb is the closest drug to cannabis in the Star Wars universe that we could find. As the official Wiki page for Marcan herb states, the drug is smoked and gives a ‘mildly euphoric’ feeling. In terms of the drug consumption style and the feelings that users are supposed to get from it, this appears to be the closest thing to cannabis that Star Wars characters have.
Are there other drugs in the Star Wars universe?
There are lots of different drugs in the Star Wars universe, and they are all categorized as ‘spices’. The most common ones that we could find include;
- Glitterstim. This drug appears to be similar to meth.
- Ryll. This ore could be used as a refined spice.
- Tempest. This is a variant of glitterstim, and could be similar to MDMA.
- Scarn. This is a much older drug.
Of course, this list is not exhaustive- there are plenty of other drugs in the Star Wars universe. There are also several other substances that have effects on specific character groups in the universe, like salt, for example.
What other fictional universes feature cannabis?
It’s not just Star Wars that features cannabis, of course. It’s shown heavily in horror films and old school cult classics- notably, the Scary Movie series. As this Medium article notes, TV shows like The Mighty Boosh also feature cannabis, as do modern shows like Disjointed.
Why is it important to have cannabis and CBD in pop culture?
To finish up this article on a vaguely serious note, we wanted to state that it’s actually very positive to see cannabis and products similar to substances like CBD being shown in a healthy, medicinal way in pop culture. This may sound strange, but it helps to remove stereotypes surrounding medicinal cannabis, CBD and hemp products.
Of course, there are people who misuse these products and it’s not wise to glamorize this with pop culture- that goes without saying. But showing herbal medicine in mainstream media is an interesting and positive move that’ll certainly benefit the cannabis and CBD community overall. If you’re interested in learning more about this, take a look at these great CBD oil listings.
To sum up
As you can see, there is cannabis in the Star Wars universe- and plenty of other substances as well. It’s safe to say that there were plenty of characters in the films indulging, and we’re sure that there were plenty of characters indulging in the comics and books as well.
Han Solo and Chewbacca really were bringing new meaning to the term ‘best buds’.
CBD, cannabis and hemp are hugely popular topics right now, and we’re sure to see more of this in pop culture as time goes on. If you’re looking to learn more about CBD in particular, we’d recommend getting started with this article.
