On Thursday, September 28th 1966 the first ever episode of the original Star Terk series was broadcast on the US TV network NBC. The series was greenlit by the network executives based upon the pilot 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', which introduced the friendship between William Shatner's Captain Kirk and the late Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock. This was in actual fact the second pilot epiode the network had commissioned. The original pilot episode, entitled 'The Cage', starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Cristopher Pike, wasn't so well received by NBC executives.
In this episode Captain Pike was portrayed as a tired and weary commander comtemplating resignation from Starfleet from the traumatic events he had previously experienced on Rigel VII, whereby Pike had lost a few good men. These events where mentioned and shown briefly in flashback and as part of the episodes narrative, but never fully explored, until now...
The aptly named Rigel 7 Productions have amassed a stellar cast of former Star Trek stars to explore the adventures of the lesser known captain of the USS Enterprise. STAR TREK: CAPTAIN PIKE will be a (45 MIN) Pilot film that will lead into, and act as the prequel to, the feature length “STAR TREK: ENCOUNTER AT RIGEL”.
If you saw the original series Star Trek Pilot “The Cage”, then you remember Captain Pike discussing his previous mission with the ships doctor and seeing many flashbacks throughout the episode. At the beginning of The Cage, set in the year 2254, Pike and his crew are recuperating from a mission to Rigel VII during which several members of the landing party were killed by the inhabitants. The incident filled Pike with so much guilt that he is considering resigning his commission.
In Encounter at Rigel, you will see this story. The original series never showed us what happened, only quick flashbacks, but never the whole story.
“Star Trek: Captain Pike” has already begun to attract media attention as well as interest from many actors and studio executives who are interested in seeing this innovative new project. Captain Pike has the one of the best visual effects artists in the world!
