Recent reports have suggested that with Legendary now producing both the sequel to last years Godzilla and the forthcoming Kong: Skull Island with Warner Bros., and with talk of a virtually all-but-confirmed crossover between the two, that Mexican director Guillermo del Toro's Kaiju centric sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim had been either delayed or indefinitely on hold. Yet according to a recent interview with IGN del Toro ascertains that the sequel is still a go ahead...
“It's not cancelled. I'm gonna do a little movie in between, if [the studio] deem[s] to approve it. But in the meantime we're turning in a budget and a script in three weeks [on Pacific Rim 2]. So it's still active. I still have my producer working on the budget and I still have the writer working on the script.”
While talking to the director of the forthcoming gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, IGN took the opportunity to quiz del Toro on his opinion of the Godzilla v Kong news, and whether or not he was up for his Jaegers and Kaiju joining the fray...
“I don't know where that [talk] came from. And I really don't think it can. I mean, they can do whatever they want -- it's their universe, they own the property. But I don't see how they can. I don't see them mashing together. People say, somebody said, 'Would you like it?' I said, 'Yeah, it would be cool.' But I was not really proposing something definitely!”
Kaiju fans seem to be having a nuclear sized meltdown over the impossibility of a 50 feet tall Gorilla and 350 feet tall lizard, so adding del Toro's skyscraper sized mechs to the rquation would likely make fans heads explode. While being a fanboy at heart it seems del Toro believes his creation should stand seperate, so lets hope that Legendary dont coerce him to include Monarch as being responsible for the creation of the PPDC (Pan Pacific Defense Corp).
