Indiana Jones rumors have a persistant hold upon the internet. It has now become big news whenever Harrison Ford will continue to be involved in the franchise. There has been much talk of recasting Indiana Jones, of a possible fifth story that involves casting a younger actor. This would hypothetically be done by either framing the fifth movie as a prequel film or as a sort of passing on the torch film. However, Total Film recently addressed these rumors head on in their latest issue during an interview with Frank Marshall. They asked Marshall about the speculation that Chris Pratt would replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones: Marshall would only say:
“There are a lot of rumours,” Marshall admitted. “We haven’t even sat down to talk about Indy yet… at some point we’ll sit down. But there’s a bunch of people who could probably take the baton.”
Marshall also mentioned that they’re “not doing the Bond thing where we’re going to call somebody else Indiana Jones… we have to figure this out.”
I believe that Marshall’s words indicate that the script of Indiana Jones 5 is still undergoing constant rewrites. In my opinion they are attempting to continue the Indiana Jones franchise, but recognize that Harrison Ford may soon be too old to play the role of Indiana Jones. In addition, it seems that Indiana Jones as a franchise may have been put on the backburner due to Star Wars being prioritized in the LucasFilm deal.
It also sounds like a potential search for new cast members has also been conducted at least on a superficial level. However, I do believe that Frank Marshall’s comments indicate that whoever is casted would more likely be a ‘spiritual’ sequel to Indiana Jones rather then Indiana being a title. In my opinion there is one way that this could be implemented successfully. I would not be adverse to seeing Indiana Jones being the inspiration for another adventurer in a sequel. Someone who has possibly studied Indiana’s life story and possibly hopes to emulate it, is my best hope. What are your thoughts about the possibility of recasting Indy and/or Ford Returning to the role?
