One of the best things about movies is the creative thinking that goes into making them. This is especially true for the sci-fi genre, which is bursting with all sorts of imaginative ideas and out-there concepts. Sci-fi movies typically involve technology of some kind and usually, it’s integrated into the plot. If not, it’s featured prominently enough, e.g. as a prop a character uses, that viewers can see it and understand how it works.

Many sci-fi movies are set in the future and make predictions about what life will be like in however many years. Betting on things to come is, of course, a very popular activity. While sports betting is huge, most online sportsbooks such as https://ggbet.expert/en let you place bets on important events that are months or even over a year away.

Technology is a key component of the sci-fi genre and many sci-fi movies include pieces of tech that could be invented at some point in the future. Some predictions are yet to come true or might never come true at all. In this article, we’ll showcase a few examples of tech used today that sci-fi movies have accurately predicted.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Hailed as one of the most influential movies of all time, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey divided critics thanks to its unconventional filming style and some of its themes. However, it’s very much regarded as a classic of the sci-fi genre and still generates debate today, nearly 60 years after its 1962 release.

The film made some bold predictions, many of which ended up becoming true. It was released a year before man first set foot on the moon, though its depiction of what Earth looks like from the moon was very accurate. Also, a lot of the technology that was used on the spaceship and space station ended up becoming commonplace not just in space exploration but in general life. There’s the use of flat-screen technology, video conferencing devices and tablets with glass screens, to give a few examples.

I, Robot

Starring Will Smith, the movie I, Robot, was released in 2004 and is set in Chicago in the year 2035. The premise is that public servies roles have been filled by robots that obey three key laws. The inventor of the robots has supposedly killed himself, though some believe that one of his robots muredered him.

The movie features autonomous cars which weren’t being developed back in 2004, but have now been created by multiple companies. They’re not exactly common on the roads, mainly because there are lots of legal complications and obstacles to deal with first. Some places have legalized them, while others have forbidden them. Even in places where autonomous cars have been made legal, the rollout of them is slow. Many people prefer to drive cars themselves or be a passenger in a car with a human driver. Autonomous cars might not be filling up our roads, but they’re another example of a kind of technology that was predicted in a movie and is now real.

Iron Man 3

One of many movies in the Marvel universe is Iron Man 3, which came out in 2013. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular character, the movie is said to have predicted the development of nanotechnology. This is technology that involves manipulating atoms on an incredibly small scale in order to better produce large-scale structures.

In Iron Man 3, we see nanotechnology in the highly advanced suit that Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark wears. It consists of a huge number of tiny nanobots or nanoparticles that are capable of both disassembling and reassembling themselves. This enables the suit to be stored in extremely small spaces, and when it’s in its full form, it offers the wearer many advantages. Real-life nanotechnology is nowhere near close to replicating the suit, but it’s already being used in a range of areas such as physics, chemistry, biology and engineering.

Wall-E

The Disney-Pixar film Wall-E came out in 2008 and was an experimental effort for the studio. It’s set in a future time when humans have vacated Earth, and the titular character is one of many robots tasked with cleaning up the mess left behind. Wall-E is a self-operating robot that collects garbage and compresses it into tiny cubes.

The company Volvo, best known for being one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, has developed technology similar to what’s seen in the Wall-E movie. Specifically, it’s created ROAR, which involves the use of both drones and robots. What happens is the drone scans an area and chooses bins to be emptied. A robot is then sent to empty each bin onto the back of a truck; the robot is fully capable of performing its tasks on its own. It’s not exactly the same as in Wall-E, but it’s very close.
