One of the few criticisms that George Millers critically acclaimed Mad Max Fury Road recieved, especially from fans of the long running franchise was that Tom Hardy's Max Rockatanksy was sidelined by Charilze Therons' Furiosa, with many fans feeling that Max had been relegated to little more than a supporting character. While it could be argued that Max has always been a supporting character in his own franchise, it cannot be denied that Fury Road's narrative was more a story about Furiosa than it ever was of Max. Thankfully for fans and critics, it appears as though the balance will be addressed in the next Mad Max movie which, according to what creator and director Miller said recently to Coming Soon, will not feature Furiosa...
“She’s [Furiosa]not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.”
Miller then went on to explain that the previously announced title for the next movie in the franchise; Mad Max: The Wasteland is nothing more than a working title...
“That name came out, that was just a working title. Nico Lathouris and I wrote deep backstories on all the characters and they eventually became screenplays – so we have two [more movies]. I’m happy to say that there’s discussions about them right now, but I hope the next film I make is a very small without any special effects and not many stunts.”
So Mad Max 5, or whatever it will be called will likely start production after Millers next, low key, movie and will not star Charlize Theron, hopefully focusing more on Tom Hardy's Max, and possibly addressing the inconsistences between Fury Road and the previous trilogy starring Mel Gibson.
