Back when this movie first came out, I was in junior high. My friends and I where all very excited to see it. As it turned out, I ended up in the dark theater alone watching it, since my friends all got asked for ID when they tried to buy their tickets, but no one asked me for mine... yes, they actually did that back then...
Maybe it was the fact I saw it by myself, or the fact I did not know what to expect, but at 14 this movie simply blew me away for its suspense, let alone the creepy monster-thing itself.
Decades later, it still holds up very well. One of the producers at the time in a making-of had talked about how for the creature, they used all real world things and did not rely on cgi (such as it was in its infancy anyway). They used things like eggs, ketchup, mayonnaise, colored waters, etc. and many other real life materials, which I think is why this movie's monster still works. Had they attempted to use more of the day FX it might just appear cruddy today.
But the best thing about it for me it the tension amongst the men trying to survive a nearly impossible scenario and trust one another. While in places the script is a bit thin and somewhat predictable, the acting is still superb and very, very believable.
No plot spoiler from me for anyone who hasn't actually seen this movie. Merely, I highly recommend it for good, creepy, sci-fi suspense and a healthy dose of monster yuck, lol. Enjoy! :)
