Guillermo Del Toro has once again done a masterpiece of a film, Pacific Rim is without a doubt the best film I have seen this year and if you haven't seen it then you should as soon as possible. Thank you Del Toro for this amazing and visually incredible film of the year.
The film starts straight into the action, the Human-Kaiju war has been going on for years and you start off straight into the eleventh our with the first scene giving some insight into where the Kaiju have come from and what the humans did to counter attack them .... THEY BUILT HUGE ROBOTS TO SMASH THEIR GIANT FACES .... these robots are called Jaegers ( German for Hunter) and require 2 pilots to operate them through the use of a mind melding process called "The Drift" (not too complicated to understand).
The film has a great story to it as well as Del Toro's morals which is slightly hinted at in many other pieces of his work. The Visual effects used in the film are unbelievable and had me sitting at the edge of my seat, the detail that goes into every Kaijus face and every mechanism in the Jaegers is jaw dropping, you cant help but think that robots and monsters are real.
Without spoiling the film too much there are 4 main Jaegers that you see in the film, There is Cherno Alpha the Russian Juggernaut that is piloted by husband and wife team the Kaidanovsky's, Crimson Typhoon the unique Chinese Jaeger operated by 3 brothers the Wei Triplets, Striker Eureka The latest and most powerful Australian Jaeger piloted by father and son duo the Hanson's, And finally you get to witness the awesomeness that is Gipsy Danger, the hero of the film, but you will have to wait and see to find out and him.
After seeing these Jaegers battling out in the Hong Kong sea you will be wanting more ... a lot more. When you are watching each fight between the Jaegers and Kaiju you will easily be rooting for the mechas to win when you see that they are both equally matched. its not a film where the good guys are overpowered or the bad guys cannot lose it is a perfectly blended mix of the two making you really feel for the difficulty that the 2 pilots in each machine undergo.
Going onto the cast of the film Del Toro has chosen the perfect cast in my opinion, he hasn't done what Hollywood has done and chosen an all star cast of a-lister actors using that to make the film a success he has chosen actors perfect for the roles of there characters, Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) plays washed up Jaeger pilot Raleigh Beckett who's performance is brilliant with great emotion and awesomeness. Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) plays Mako Mori a trainee pilot and co-pilot with Beckett for Gipsy Danger, Idris Elba (Prometheus, Luther) ... need I say more ... this is one actor who is indeed one of my most favourite in this film playing Marshal Stacker Pentecost former pilot and current leader of the Jaeger programme, the he one awesome character and you will love him, as with Del Toro's other hit films you will find Ron Perlman which he plays Hannibal Chau in this, a black market Kaiju body parts dealer who you will thoroughly enjoy. There are many great actors in this film but I would be talking all day if I where to include them all.
there is not all action in the film, a different prospect with the 2 comedic scientists portrayed by Charlie Day (A sunny day in Philadelphia) and Burn Gorman (Torchwood, The Dark Knight Rises) add some humour to this action packed thrill ride. With amazing movie dialogue "Today we are CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE" and some incredible visual and fighting effects Pacific rim is a summer hit worthy of the title.
To sum this film with two words I am going to say "ELBOW ROCKET" this is something that will leave many School children with dead arms throughout the week. This is a 5 star summer hit that must be seen before it finishes at the cinema and is a must to buy when it comes out on DVD, Thank you Guillermo Del Toro for an amazing experience.
