This movie was pretty much what it promised to be and that was simply monster fighting robots. There's not much else to say. The plot is kind of straightforward. All the fights look amazing and I llike how original the designs are for the kaiju. Charlie Day's character newt is really interesting and fun to watch, Idris Elba is badass as usual, and Ron Perlman does well for the scenes he's in. I actully found the two main characters to be the weakest out of the cast. I'm not really sure what it is about Rinko Kikuchi that I don't like but I guess I would just say everything rather than try to narrow it down. Her acting isn't the great, her character's story is pretty uninteresting. I'm supposed to feel for the trauma she had with a kaiju attacking her, but in a world that is constantly being bombarded with monsters I didn't feel that was that special of an experience. Charlie Hunnam at least had a reason that was special to his trauma.
The movie also tends to gloss over some things. For instance they just kind of stop making Jaegars because of this wall they're building, but kaiju are literally going through the wall with no problem, seems kind of like a pointless way to make those pilots special. The second and biggest problem I have with the movie is how it glosses over the aliens controlling the kaiju. That's a BIG plot element, and it just kind of says, "yeah they're getting controlled let's go blow them up." The fact they were being controlled is never really talked about after they learn it. Overall though it's a fun movie and I would recommend it to an sci fi fan.
