So I've seen this movie five times now, three in the theater and twice at home. I can definitely say that, while this movie isn't what the marketing promised, it is still a VERY worthy entry into the Godzilla franchise. First off, everything Godzilla-related is handled near perfectly. His design, his roar, his mannerisms/actions, his atomic breath are all amazing. Also, Edwards directs every monster scene with love. He really captures the size and majesty of all three monsters very well, particularly the male MUTO's birth, every scene Godzilla is in, and the scene where the MUTOs finally meet. Godzilla and Ford Brody are parallel heroes, and that is handled relatively well. Their backstories mirror each other (both had family killed by MUTOs) and the scene where they lock eyes for a few seconds is pretty touching. What keeps this movie from perfection is the human story. I really was not invested in Ford Brody at all, and Serizawa plainly exists only to talk about Godzilla's origins and motivations. The female cast aside from Juliette Binocche is pretty useless, Serizawa's assistant especially. This is a shame because what I had really wanted from Godzilla was great Godzilla stuff with great human drama, but once Bryan Cranston leaves the story I didn't invest in any of the human cast. That being said, I'm giving this movie high HIGH marks because the monster stuff is pretty much flawless. The MUTOs and Godzilla carry this movie from 3 to 4 stars for me. It's great to see the King of the Monsters finally realized in a major Hollywood movie and I look forward to the next installment in 2018.
